Drive up
Drove the road in high clearance Tundra. Only saw one couple with atvs. Low range 4x4 to protect engine on a hot day. Found that my oil filler cap was missing on the summit. Crammed paper towels in for the drive to Phoenix.

This is a really cool hike. The road to the trailhead isn't great, and 4WD is required.

from the south
I did this one with "Rubi" (my trusty 2003 Jeep Wrangler). Some say that is cheating and while that may be so, it afforded me the opportunity to hike 3 other AZ peaks that day.

Harquahala Trail
Very nice hike and really cool desert scenery. The trail does not seem to see a lot of use as the last entry at the trailhead register was over a month old. Also, the trail was pretty overgrown and faint in places. I had the mountain all to myself. Great views from the top though a bit hazy.

One Of The Best!!!
This was my favorite desert hike, to date. The road was rough, but the trail was well-signed and easy to follow. It only took me 2H15M to the summit, then a 15M break, and then 2H0M back to the trailhead. I was really moving well, and I think it helped that I was in the morning shade for most of the ascent and had the sun at my back for most of the descent. Highly recommended!
Via the Harquahala Mountin Trail. Low clouds around and below me on the summit, no one else on the trail today. The people who drive to the summit on the road shouldn't be allowed to sign the register!

I've been up this one a couple of times, always via the road. And a crappy road it is.

Trail
The trail is a dandy, really enjoyed it as it was like walking through an arboretum specialing in desert flora. I went with Rick Hartman of Prescott and the night before the hike Rick cooked his famous "BBQ" chicken. The stuff just melted in your mouth. We hiked it early to beat the heat which warmed up to the low 90's
by the time we returned to our vehicles. Also, on a saturday, we had the summit to ourselves, no one else hiked or drove it.

Harqy Summit Trail
A Valentine's hike with my wife. Spent night in Salome. Definitely backroad AZ. Also climbed it in 1997 hiking up nearly the full length of the access road from the south. I much prefer the north route for hiking. Our reports

Been over 2 months since my last hike and was good to get out. Cold and windy on top. Some snow was present. The wind blew the smog away which made for a very visible day. We could see into Califoria, almost to Yuma, almost to Kingman and saw the Four Peaks. Increadible view.
