After work evening
Another wonderful evening peakbagging outing. Started at the bottom of the ATV trail that ascends to the ridge between Hawkins and Pickett. Did Hawkins first, and then over to Pickett for sunset. Weird/cool looking Midsommar-esque structure up on Hawkins.

Via Jeep Road
After getting punished by the weather at Lake Winnemucca the day before, we took zero chances this day and drove up high on the mountain; showed my 6 and 9 year olds "the ropes" on the the remaining class 1/2 terrain. Amazing views of the unstable weather over the Mokelumne Wilderness from the cluttered summit.

Dayhike
Combined with Pickett on a windy day, views were fantastic but the wind sure was annoying. Luckily we could hide behind the large tower on top of Hawkins for a break.
Started at charity valley trailhead (right before Grover hot springs SP), walked along CV trail then after 1/4 mi beelined up the righthand ridge and past the "castle" crag block that overlooks hot springs valley. Shaved a few miles off going this way. On the way down summited a smaller peak to the SW (nice granite class 3+), then down-climbed, following hot springs Creek skipping Burnside lake completely and back into HS valley to return.
Day hike from the Bay Area. Parked at the gate and walked the road, then x-country.

Second attempt
After being chased off the mountain earlier in the year by a thunderstorm, I was glad to make it on this try. We took the fire road up, so while it wasn't the most interesting route it was a gorgeous day and we saw only a handful of other people.

Hawkins/Pickett
Climbed the north face and descended to the west. Enjoyable view from the top. Spent about 30 minutes just taking in the sights.

With Pickett from 88/89 Junction
Figured the lack of snow would allow for a winter ascent using the service road - started at the 88/89 junction, followed service road most of the way before breaking off for the final ascent up Hawkins. Then followed ridgeline over towards Pickett, looked quite difficult from far away but pretty easy class 3 climb. Cross country through forest to hook back up with service road after Pickett. Only needed snowshoes for about 20 minutes while on descent from Hawkins on NW facing slope towards Pickett. After than hiking boots were fine. Used microspikes on service road as warm daytime temps led to lots of ice in the early evening chill. Trip report is HERE.

Great Fall Hike
Hike Hawkins along with Pickett on a beautiful fall day. The colors were great in the Hope Valley and temps were perfect. We started from the wrong trailhead but everything was fine with a little more cross-country.

Windy!
About 4 billion MPH winds on the top, whipping through the hideous communication tower. Some toolbag ruined the Hawkins rock by etching something very close to the Hawkins sig. But still cool to see that old etching.

Fun fall hike
Summit was disappointing with a bunch of "construction" stuff on top.
Appears to be a coms repeater (cell site?), agreed the view would be even nicer if the summit didn't have all these antennas and solar arrays!

Did Pickett first. Hawkins next. Snow just below the summit block made it tricky. Some of our group wasn't able to make it up.

with Pickett, from Burnside Road (2x)
From Burnside road near the Burnside Mine/Creek turnout.
Hit Hawkins first and then Pickett. Small snowfield traverse needed on Hawkins which should be avoidable in a week or two.
Saw a bear on the slopes of Hawkins on the ascent.

Winter trip, 2x
First trip on Oct 13, 2007. Spent the morning on Mount Patterson and drove here in the afternoon. The gate was open to the jeep road from Burnside Lake Road, so drove up to within 400 feet of the top. Short, pleasant hike from there.
Second trip January 16, 2011. Cloud level was 9500 feet in the morning, but almost 100% sunny by the time I made the top. Good snow conditions, and up Pickett on the way. Nice full day for a winter outing.
