The conditions on this hill were so ridiculous that Mike and I laughed most of the day - as in "This is friggin' insane, why are we doing this?". Honestly, two ice tools and some crampons would have been nice on this pretty little dirt heap. ;)

BadlandsThat reminds me of a climb my son and I did in the Badlands of South Dakota. We had to find sticks to use like ice axes to top out on one of those compressed piles of dirt. We even coined a term for stuff like this: "technical dirt climbing". Is that a D2 or D3? :-)

Re: BadlandsI LOVE the technical dirt climbing ratings! I've ascended peaks with short sections of steep dirt, but never before the Wickiup had I spent an entire ascent on the crap. It was unreal. Everything seemed to give way under our feet and hands! And, yes, we used a stick and a trekking pole for added traction.
