Pfälzerhütte-Alp Ijes-Hinter/Vorder/Hinter Grauspitze-Steg  Sucess!

Great solo trip, nice climb, almost nobody in the mountains. Fortunatelly I met two local people on top of Hinter G., who showed me pretty fast and short way down the nothern snowfields:-)

Normal route from Steg  Sucess!

Followed the normal route from Liechtenstein (started at the parking in Steg). We planned to continue to the Vorderer Grauspitz but were forced to turn around just below the summit because of a hurdle of wilds goats that looked pretty aggressive. The ridge is easier than it looks. Just be careful with all the loose rocks.

From the Pfälzerhütte, by way of Ijesfürgli  Sucess!

There was still a lot of snow, and I went up to Ijesfürgli on crampons. Partway up, I saw a recent track, but whoever had made it, didn't have crampons, which prooved that they were not absolutely necessary. Nevertheless, I was glad to have them, because it got a bit steep just below the saddle and my crampons gave me good purchase.

It was a perfect day to be up there. Lots of sunshine, unlike the previous days. The ridge towards the Schwarzkopf was easy going, but downclimbing beyond it towards the Grauspity was tricky because of the poor rock quality. The climbing grade isn't all that high, but lots of loose stuff makes it dangerous. I went very slow and deliberate. Later, on my way back, climbing up again was a lot easier. From Ijesfürgli I descended into Switzerland and hiked to the Schesaplanahütte.

Rain, snow and fogg  Sucess!

Originally the plan was to climb Grauspitz, but we ended up on the slopes leading to that peak in snow and 100 m visibility, this combined with wet rocks and grass mixed with snow forced us to cancel that climb. Climbed back up to the ridge leading to Schwarzhorn and dediced to climb that peak just to have some succes.
I have never seen so many cows (and stepped in so much cow shit...) as on this route, and I could still hear the sound of cow bells when I went to sleep ;0)

From the swiss side  Sucess!

Hot day! Steep and grassy ridges leading to the summit. This ist the starting point of the ridge to Grauspitz, the highest summit of Liechtenstein.

Good bag  Sucess!

Good peak bag en-route to the Vorder Grauspitz. The descent from the Hinter Grauspitz down to gain the ridge is harrowing!

Route Climbed: From the Swiss side and a final approach from the east Date Climbed: 31 August 2002  Sucess!

On my third attempt to reach the Grauspitz (the big "sister" to the Hinter Grauspitz), I stumbled upon this summit in the clouds/fog, thinking it was the Grauspitz. My GPS and the summit log clued me in that I was not on the desired summit! A map check up there added to the humiliation. I signed the summit register at 15:05 hours, and noted I could not see a thing (40 meter visibility as seen in the photos on the mountain page). The memorial statute will startle you if approaching in obscured visibility.
