Route climbed: Hocharn traverse and Goldzechkopf traverse
Long, but nice and interesting route.
On friday afternoon we (my girlfriend and climbing-partner Irene and me) did the ascent from "Alter Pocher" to "Otto-Umlauft bivouac" (2.987 m) via the valley of "Grosse Fleiss" (more than 1.400m of altitude difference). We slept at the bivouac (shared it with one other guy, Peter). At 6 a.m. we enjoyed the ridge (including nice sunrise mood) to the summit of Hocharn (3.254 m) an summited around 7:30 a.m.
After descending to the notch "Goldzechscharte" we did a traverse of Goldzechkopf (3.042 m). The descent from Goldzechkopf to the south(east) is slightly challenging - downclimbing a vertical wall (secured with fixed ropes) and descending a steep snow-/ice-field (app. 40° in the upper part). After this part we reached the normal route of "Hoher Sonnblick" and descended via the lake "Zirmsee" back to our car. A nice round-trip within 26 hours car-to-car.
Route Climbed: several Date Climbed: 1984-1989-1996
I've been three times on Hocharn yet:
August 21th 1984: It was near the end of a 3-week hiking trip through the Tauern, two weeks I did alone. I climbed from Zittelhaus on Sonnblick via Goldzechkopf. I was not experienced in climbing and was very proud to have reached my highest mountain ever. In perfect weather I stayed 3 hours on the summit, then descended to Grieswies-Schwarzkopf and along the snow field to Kolm Saigurn
July 24th 1989: I did the same guiding some friends of our alpine club. We had to await a rain shower in a little cave 100 m before the summit.
June 8th 1996: Did it with ski from Kolm Saigurn. There was less snow than expected, less then in summers 1984 and 1989. We had to carry our ski from 1500 m to 2700 m unless we could use them on the Hocharn Kees. Downhill with ski was worth the trip though, using culoirs and fields of avalanches we could ski down to beneath 2000 m.
