did the cross couloir late in the spring of last year. Quite a fun experience. we took the normal route back down. I want to go back to that area and do the 13er that is just to the SE of Holy Cross. I forget the name of it right now. That couloir that you can see from the bottom of the cross couloir looks like a real trip. steep and fun.
Easy hike up the North ridge, my climbing partner and I took our girl friends on their first 14ner and all made it without any problems.

Great day on Halo Ridge

A beautiul day on a beautiful mountain.

Halfmoon
This is such a gorgeous peak! And we started with headlamps under a half moon... Four and a half hours on the ascent which was pretty intense due to the fact that one has to gain treeline 3 times.

Workout
A very demanding ascent, but the rain on the hike out was a nice cool-off.

Autumn Bliss
Beautiful, cool, sunny, perfect autumn day! Unfortunately, it was also the same day that Michelle Vanek mysteriously disappeard from the peak. We may have been some of the last folks to speak with her (she started before us and asked where the trailhead was). I climbed it with 3 other teachers from the school where I worked, and none of our pics or videos helped with the search. Maybe years from now, the mystery will be solved.

Route: North Ridge via Half Moon
Uphill both ways with some snow? Wait... isn't this the route that my Grandpa took to school? My first CO 14er - amazingly beautiful and the friendliest climbers I've ever encountered.

RAIN:-(
We knew in the parking lot at 6am that we were in for a day hike with no summit.... it was raining:( We hiked anyways in the rain (no thunderheads) and made it all the way to 45 minutes away from the summit before we turned around. We have to go back. (See my July 14,2007 summit via Halo Ridge)!:-)

halo not so good for dogs and ankles
I sure liked the portion of the trip from Half Moon TH to the summit of Holy Cross, but I stopped having fun on the Halo Ridge. The footing is pretty bad, on loose, often large talus. Fell down a few times when rocks came loose. My 40-lb, two foot tall dog really didn't like contouring on the rocks, and that put a damper on the day; if my baby isn't happy, I'm not happy!

LONG trip over Halo Ridge!
Beautiful flower-filled talus hopping LONG hike! Donned full packs to Halo Ridge shelter where we stayed the night (zero sleep- who can sleep at 13,080 feet?!). Summited the following day- WOW, the "bowl of tears" and views of the Cross were astounding... worth every pain in my legs at the days end! "Descended" the standard route... 14.25 miles roundtrip loop hike.

Angelica and the Halo
Hit Angelica in the morning around 7am, snow was still good, even a little hard in the upper shaded region. Topped out with no one in site on a crystal clear day. Then descended the Halo Ridge back over Notch Mt to the Halfmoon TH. Great hike, awesome views, lots of wild flowers on the ridge. Beware the mosquitos.

Wow
Great hike, cloud ceiling was about 15K and made things look interesting. Hiked in the first 3 miles in the dark and camped over. Some snow above 13K. One of the best hikes I've done!

Holy Long Day
Well, it was an exhausting long day. Beautiful area and scenes. Unfortunately the day my partner and I went, it was overcast and snowing. The ascent of N. couloir was really good, bomber snow pack and was certainly steeper near summit. Plenty of picking. Surging winds and snow made descent interesting. 18hrs later, arrived at park entrance and car.

Standard North Ridge Route
Beautiful mountain, gorgeous surrounding scenery, and a fun hike. Started out around 7 and summitted around 11am. The view of Mt. of the Holy Cross from the top of Half Moon Pass was absolutely stunning. The only downside to this route was having to climb 900 or so vertical feet on the return up Half Moon Pass- it made for very tired legs at the end of the day.

Cross Couloir
This was my first snow climb and I loved it. I'm totaly hooked on snow routes now. A high camp is recommend for an early start. I did this route solo, and it was a blast. A climbing partner wouldn't be a bad idea. If you and the snow is in good condition it is not that difficult of a route. I plan to do this one again! START EARLY!
