rime!
Thick rime covered everything making for an interesting yet beautiful hike. Well worth the slog up the road from the lower 2wd trailhead.

From SCL via West Ridge
Wonderful day in the mountains with some great friends! Saw a few bighorns and quite a lot of marmots too. The view of the Crestones from the summit and trail along the west ridge is breathtaking.

South Face/West Ridge
Stephanie and I took a meandering route up the south face which connected with the west ridge. Absolutely brutal conditions on the summit ridge and summit. Only time I've been on the summit of a peak and was worried about getting lost.
Clouds all day and rime covered EVERYTHING. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought I was in Antartica.

Kit Carson/Challenger/Humbolt
Started at Willow Lake TH in the morning with Ted Romero. Got Kit Carson, Challenger and then went over Kat Carson on the way to Humbolt. A storm rolled in and we bailed down Spanish Creek drainage. Long, long day.

Great view of Crestones!
Hiking from east ridge, descending toward S. Colony Lakes, great day in Sangre!

Great Second Choice
After climbing 20 feet up the Ellingwood Arete and deciding the icy conditions would prove too much for our relatively inexperienced group (Kerr and Eric), we headed up Humboldt for a better view of the area. It's a beautiful spot with views as far south as the small mountain along side the Rio Grande Gorge south of Taos.
I ran into my first wild Colorado bear on the Rainbow Trail while hiking alone. I passed the trail to go up the east ridge, so I climbed straight up the "fall line" until I got above tree line, and fortunately the ridge I was on led to the east summit ridge. On the way down, I bush-whacked somewhere along the east ridge and came out just above the South Colony Lake road closure. Bluebird day, didn't see any hikers, just a lot of elk.

2nd time
We traversed from Kat Carsen, over obstuction. Super high winds becuase of a sandstorm over the Sangres. We'd take 20 steps, then brace for the winds over and over....

Got weathered off the Needle, so did Humboldt instead. Probably the worst weather I've hiked a 14er in.

East ridge-winter ascent
Enjoyed a nice late winter day via the east ridge. Snow was somewhat consolidated on the south slopes, but brutally steep between about 10400' and 11000'. The snow on the ridge was very firm. Nice catwalk along the ridge with glorious winter views.
