East ridge, early storm, no summit
Gorgeous day (for the most part). Carried snowshoes and an ice axe, didn't use either.
At 8:20a, a few clouds started building. At 9:20 it started snowing. At 10:15a, with less than 1/4 mi from the summit and still no thunder, we called it quits. The air was so ionized (buzzing, poles shocked us, even my hair pins were vibrating against my head, etc.) that we high tailed it straight down the rocky South face to the nearest batch of trees (took 1.5 hours to "high tail" it down the loose rock, while thunder began in the distance).
We followed a stream to S Colony Rd and called it a day...thankful to not be another statistic.
Still a GREAT day. I hope next time that the weather will work in our favor.

Humbolt Saddle
Ben and I climbed summitted in the evening of May 1st, only six days before TalusMonkey died climbing Humbolt. We left the Sangre de Cristo Range May 5th due to horrible weather conditions after spending 12 days climbing in the range. We summitted Broken Hand Peak earlier that morning.

West Ridge
A good hike with good friends! Don't beat up your car on the approach into the South Colony Creek Drainage. It's a long walk from the 2WD trailhead, but the South Colony Lakes make for excellent camping. We also saw many big horn sheep.
This was a weak consolation hike after getting rained out of the area with big plans for a bunch of the technical routes. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go back.

Humbolt Winter Summit Ski Descent
Snowmobile to 11,000' on S Colony Road. Skinned up SE gully to 13,200'. Booted up talus/snow to summit, skied from summit down SE gully to S. Colony Road. Had to remove skis and walk over 100' of rock shortly after summit.

sunset hike
Dashed up from South Colony Lakes and caught a spectacular sunset over the Crestones. Getting down the talus in the dark wasnt much fun

Without that mess of rock scree on top, this wouldn't be a 14er.

After finishing a spectacular summit early in the day on Crestone Needle, we decided we had the strength to head back down to S.Colony Lakes and hike up Humboldt. Spectacular views of the Crestones from the Peak!

West Ridge
Started at the 4x4 TH. Cloudy day, so not much to see. Got rained on almost the whole way back (again).
Anyone know if there is anything technical on Humboldt? Since it was dark I couldn't tell but it looked like there might be something on the cliffs below the ridge.
Climbed in the moonlight with my girlfriend, had the whole peak to ourselves! We got a little off route in the darkness but once we got off the ridge we didn't even need the headlamps. Awesome moonlight reflection off South Colony Lakes!
