Buggy  Sucess!

So, so buggy. Camped at Sundance Lake. First one to summit in the morning. Wildflower explosion but the price was many many fly and mosquito bites.

Hyndman Peak  Sucess!

My 3rd Idaho County High Point + claiming my home county. We road our mountain bikes until the Aspen grove which is an awesome way to get back to the car after a long steep day.

Back in the Day  Sucess!

To the best of my knowledge this was near the time we climbing it. We backpacked in and camped along the trail, climbed the next day and back at base camp and then out. Climbing with Heather Elsey, Sean Kim, and Jim Greer. 1st of the 12's.

Missed a decade  Sucess!

Not bad for an old guy...I beat the pack to the top. And there was a bit of a crowd. Steeper than I remembered, but a great day! Traditional route. Fourth or fifth time, I can't remember...here's a photojournal:

Class 2 doesn't mean easy!  Sucess!

Hyndman reminded me that rock class doesn't always equate to how strenuous it is! The saddle to the summit is a mess of scree and loose talus that looks like it could be solid but definitely isn't. Give me some solid Class 3 stuff over this any day! I would definitely stick closer to the edge of the cliff were I to do it again - the further you get away from it, the looser the rock seems to become. Not a pleasant descent. Still, the rest of the hike is gorgeous and summit views are pretty swell. Preferred the view from Standhope though even if it's 30' shorter!

Bluebird day  Sucess!

Five hours and ten minutes to the top, three and a half down. Ascended via the ridge but the descent was just straight down to the meadow to connect with the trail. The flowers near Sundance Lake were very pretty at this time of year. Bugs were pretty mild. Did Pioneer Cabin and Pt 9669 off to the northwest the day before as a warm up.

First Solo 12er  Sucess!

Nice climb for my first solo 12er. Saw a black bear along the creek in the morning. A little over 7 hours car to car. My 4th 12er.

Camped out  Sucess!

Camped out at the trailhead following a successful climb of Kane Peak. I hurt my knee a bit so I was worried I wouldn't be able to make it but I walked it off and it didn't bother me anymore.

Beautiful Summit   Sucess!

Beautiful and clear climb up. Started from the trailhead at 7am and topped out almost exactly 5 hours later around noon.

I actually mountain biked in for the first easy 2.5 miles and stashed my bike at the base of the sagebrush covered hill. I would highly recommend doing this - it makes the last 2.5 miles back to the trailhead an absolute thrill and, at 13 miles roundtrip, you'll be happy for an easy finish.

Trails are all clear of debris. Some muddy sections during the first 2.5 miles (walk your bikes around the mud!) No snow until you reach the Hyndman Basin where there is still 2-4 feet.

I would highly recommend an early start until more snow melts - I was post-holing for 2 miserable miles on the way down. Several substantially sized wet slides spotted on north facing slopes.

Tough climb, AMAZING view!  Sucess!

Camped two nights in Hyndman Basin at "Sundance" Lake, which seemed a little cheeky as it has no name on the topo. But, it gave my daughter and I the chance to really take our time getting up and down, despite the fact that the mosquitos devoured us.

I was wholly unprepared for the majestic beauty to be had from this summit. Never hiked in the Pioneers before this, but I'll definitely be back. Would love to hike Cobb Peak, what a amazing hulking mass of a mountain!

Could easily pick out dozens of lakes and other peaks from the airy summit.

Pioneers Cherry Popper

We didn't make the summit. We stopped about 300 or so feet short of the summit, as thunder/hail storms were rolling in. Still, I was super impressed with the Pioneers and the beauty/solitude they provided.

Hyndman#4  Sucess!

My 4th 12ker and my daughter's 1st. We hiked the 6 miles to the small lake just below the base for an early morning start. Weather was a little iffy early but cleared up later that morning.

Was my 3rd attempt. Motto: Just REDO it!

Indian summer  Sucess!

Perfect snow free October summit with bright yellow aspens and blue skies. Round trip was about 12.5 miles, and it took us 6 hour up, and 4 down. Great hike, I'd do it again!
