Re: WhyWe did not want to get our boots wet because we were several hours from our finish point and the temperatures were near freezing. So we didn't want to risk moving for several hours in soaked boots.

Re: barefootYou've described the feeling perfectly. Take it one step further. Dive into an icy lake. I went swimming in Peanut Lake (11,000')near Meysan Creek (Whitney area)last August. Exhilarating! Happy climbing.
