Good Traffic DayOh my...that's the best traffic shot I've seen! I'd trade that for any hour sitting in a Philadelphia rush hour! Hahaha!!

CongestionI like the pic and the ambience, not the congestion but is a photo very representative.
Cheers.

My Lord! That is a lot of climbers! Rush hour at almost 14000 feet.

Re: My Lord!I counted over 100 climbers that day. This pic just doesn't show them all. Some were already heading down and others were still coming up.
Crazy. Thanks for the vote.

Re: My Lord!As rmick25 pointed out, not 14K. Hood is 11239' high.

RopesThe slope doesn't look steep.
Is there another reason the climbers are roped?
Steeper up ahead?
Because of fear of worse visibility?
A guided group with rules?
Curious.

Re: RopesIt gets real steep up through the Pearly Gates (see pic) and sometimes it is bare ice requiring the rope. On this particular day, I was one of about 4 or 5 who went solo and unroped. The snow was such that I didn't need a rope nor wanted one.

welljust don't climb the standard route. Then you are back to 4-5 climbers max. I like the Leuthold Couloir. Anyway, I like the picture, I think it was similar when I went that way (one of my very first climbs 9 years ago...).

Great shot.It reminds me of this one that I took on the Roman Wall. Not as good as yours but the same sort of situation.

Re: Great shot.Thank you and it shows that some places need to be avoided on holiday weekends.

Wow!That's an amazing shot and a reality check. To me, part of the climbing experience is the (relative) solitude. This would have depressed me. Is it fairly difficult to remain motivated on such a crowded climb, or does the position and the beauty of the mountain outweigh the crowds.

Re: Wow!Thank you for the comments. I was surprised by the numbers of climbers that day and this pic doesn't show
the thirty or forty others that were either in the fog above or already heading back down. I felt a lot of energy though from the others and I'm sure that helped me in my solo effort. Memorial day weekend is not the time to climb this mountain.

Re: Wow!The popular mountains like Mont Blanc and Mt. Hood are definitely people magnets. Mont Blanc is a much bigger massif than Hood and Hood's problem is that almost everyone goes up and down the same route. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
