Time to go back!
Hiked up late last year, amazing views and physically rewarding, although I pretty much spent then entire decent on my butt.

First Time
With the Socal Hikers and Peakbaggers group. Started at 4:35a to beat the heat. Some perspectives from an Iron first-timer:
The climb up was steep and tough, but easier than I expected. Made it up in 4:33. The use trail was in better shape and there was far less brush (yucca, buckthorn) than I expected. The summit and views from it are splendid - worth the ordeal. The descent is absolutely brutal, harder than I expected. Next time I might traverse the ridge to Baldy and descend via the Devil's Backbone. All in all a challenging and rewarding hike.

Iron-Baldy traverse baby!
Hiked this once before. Did the Iron-Baldy traverse, took almost 12 hours, but man, what an epic hike!

Failed Attempt
The only mountain to ever reject us... Got a late start, hit our turnaround time after reaching only 5300' or so. Next time, will camp out at Heaton Flat and get an early start.

Iron Mtn via Heaton Flats
Started about 6:30am. Warm, warm morning. Found lost hiker that slept in bushes at about 6,100 ft. He lost his group from previous day. After giving him some water and food and once assured he could find his way down after pointing out the trail, we continued up to summit.

Big Iron
Traversed from Baldy across San Antonio Ridge. Cool exposed ridge scrambling! Long descent down to Heaton Flats. Great day out!

2nd time
I had forgotten really how tough this hike is. A very warm day. Was hoping to complete the traverse over to Baldy but it didn't happen. Great company on the hike up with Tina F.

Awesome hike
My buddy and I made it the top and back to our car in 12 1/2 hours. There was quite a bit of snow the last 1000' or so of altitude. It didn't look like anyone had been up there in a whlle. The peak looks deceptively close from the saddle area. This is an extremely strenuous hike for us, particularly for the San Gabriels!

Tough trail. Long on the way up. Longer on the way down. Couldn't wait to get back to the car. Can't wait to give it another go.

Slow day. 2 hrs 52 mins from Heaton Flat parking lot. 15 minutes slower this time than my last time. Met Steve Schulz, Dan Siebert, and others on the summit. Joined Steve for the traverse over to Baldy and down to Manker.

4th attempt and I win.
I love this mountain so much, and it sure gave me a run for my money. Its challenge makes it beautiful. For a full account see the trip report Big Iron--One Look Around, Two Steps Backward, and a Giant Leap Ahead. That describes how each trip went. Success after hard effort and waiting is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

Beautiful View, Good Company
Had a great climb with Augie (Mountain Impulse), it was our first time to meet in person after communicating for over a year on SP. Quite a bit of snow for the last mile or so, it was very warm so there was some post holing.

Third Time
Not my quickest ascent (about 4 hours), but the easiest so far. Or, perhaps I should say "least grueling". I over-prepared on the winter gear and it turns out there wasn't even that much snow up there.
