My first mountain
James Peak was the first mountain I summited on an unrecorded date in the summer of 1983. That was the year I moved to Colorado. I think the mountains were already in my blood. I didn't realize yet however just how much I would get into mountain climbing. This was my third climb of James Peak.

Continental Divide Traverse
We dropped my Jeep off at Rogers Pass, then returned to Berthoud Pass to start the traverse. Great day until I realized my keys were in my buddy's truck back at Berthoud Pass.

From the south along the Continental Divide Trail
Pleasant, but cool day. Started along the road to Fall River Reservoir following the Continental Divide Trail to the north.
Usually went up from Corona Pass. Been a few times from Berthoud. One time took a ridiculous approach from the Jim Creek drainage. Still wish to try from the east side.
Hiked to the summit from Loch Lomond with friends Greg and John. It was a mild sunny summer day - until the clouds blew in and it started snowing. We almost froze, but fortunately the storm blew out as fast as it came in, and the sun warmed things up quickly.
I hiked along the Loch Lomond road for awhile, then took the Continental Divide trail the rest of the way. Then I hiked down to Loch Lomond, and took the road back to the car. I started at 7:30, reached the summit at 9:45, and got back to the car just after noon. I saw fewer than ten people climbing James Peak, but there were a whole lotta vehicles parked all along the road to Loch Lomond. As I neared the summit, a helicopter landed down by Loch Lomond and stayed there for awhile.

via St. Mary's Glacier
I reached the lake at 7:00am, sought out the steepest section of snow jutting up from the lake between multiple large, rock outcroppings. Difficulty didn't exceed easy Class 3. Summited James Peak at 9:54am and was back home (Denver) at 12:40am.

East ridge
Warm sunny day made the snow awefully soft. It was the 1st time I've climbed in this area without any wind, which was a nice change. Snow was to soft to glissade from the summit, but st. mary's glacier was still a fun trip down.

East Slopes Ski
Skinned and hiked up the East Slopes from St. Mary's Glacier. Gorgeous day with lots of good snow. Windy and cold on top, but very pleasant everywhere else. Great skiing on the upper slopes and on the glacier.

And then came the snow.
Skinned the route from Stewart Rd. to just before Loch Lomond then up E slopes. Had planned on checking out Bancroft traverse (hence the Fall River Basin start)but a whiteout came in while on summit of James. Bancroft traverse is too technical to attempt blind so... skied the E slopes with 30ft visibility. Weird solo day

East slopes
Felt good to get out the crampons again, but didn't need them for long. Climbed the SE ridge and descended the East slopes. Snowshoes aren't needed now. Fun hike.
Finally got there from St Marys Snowfield after getting stormed off 4 other approaches

Fun day
Climbed James Peak by the gentle south slopes just for fun. Most notable part of the day was almost stepping on a stupid ptarmigan that didn't have the sense to move when a larger beast was approaching. In their summer plummage, they're really hard to see! A few good glissades on the way down.
