Beautiful loop accessed from the south on Bear Gulch / Johnstone Creek trails
To be honest I think I preferred this stunning view looking AT Hyndman and the other massive Pioneer peaks than the view from the top of Hyndman last year. Took East Fork Rd to the small parking area at Bear Gulch heading up the Parker Gulch trail from the south to the saddle, then climbed the very steep southwest ridge to the summit (pretty good climber's trail most of the way). Headed east cross-country to pick up the Johnstone Creek trail leading back south, and walked the half-mile along the road back to where we parked. Awesome day.

West face snowboard descent
Parked in Uncle John's Gulch and was on snow after 1 mile of dry hiking. Skinned until the last few hundred vertical, then bootpacked and scrambled to the summit. There had been 3 major avalanches in that drainage this season. Not surprising since Feb2019 was Sun Valley's snowiest month on record.

West Ridge
Ran up the west ridge from the Pioneer Cabin trail. Was a bit of a talus slog with lots of biting flies. Sweet views of the Pioneers though!

the baby pio
biked up Parker gulch, or at least tried. My lungs and legs needed many walking breaks. A short hike from the saddle was rewarded with amazing views of the Pioneers.

Good Difficulty/View Ratio
Nice short-ish hike along the south ridge to the summit. Incredible views of the Pioneers.
Bad snow pack. Sunk in up to about knee level, even with snow shoes, on parts on the way up. The descent was aborted and I took a line into Bear Gulch to get off the steeper slopes. I was sinking in almost to my waist! Posted holed on flat ground back to the road. I don't think the snow pack is freezing overnight, as projected. Great views and route though!

Nice Long Line
You can view the entire route from the road in. Was a beautiful hike in punctuated with a snow approach in the upper elevations. Views of the Pioneers along the way and at the summit are stunning.

Standard Route
Beautiful day on a beautiful mountain. Johnstone is one of the outstanding vantage points in and of the Pioneers. Snowcovered summit with a huge cornice after coming up through a softening snow bowl below the summit.
I walked up from Parker Gulch and flushed one Grouse from the first ridge in the trees. I thought this was a better view of the Pioneer's than from Pioneer cabin! I'll have to ski it in Winter.

Snowshoeing in the Pioneers
Nice peak with excellent views. Its one of only a couple peaks in the Pioneers that you can do in winter on a single day outing. Here’s a trip-report and some photos. It was a great day!

We were able to get to the starting point with 4 wheel drive. The last mile was not plowed, but had some previous vehicle traffic since the last snow. We broke trail with snowshoes all the way to the summit which took us about 4 hours. We flew down in 1:45 after enjoying the view from the summit. Hiked with Jeromeclimber, and bigdan. Great day!
