On July 26, 1869 Julius Marshall Elliott set out to climb the Schreckhorn together with the Zermatt guide Franz Biener. Getting higher up Biener offered Elliot a rope but he preferred to climb unroped. At a difficult passage Elliot slipped. Biener was able to hold him by one hand but in the end Elliot shot to his death at high speed down the icy slopes of the north-eastern face of the Schreckhorn (Peak of Terror).
