There are few peaks that seem as out of place as this one. The only truly steep alpinish peak in the northeast. An incredible place. Hope to have the time to get some climbing in there during the winter time one day!

Completion of A.T. thru-hike
Of my several ascents of Mount Katahdin, this one was the most meaningful, as it was the culmination of a six-month trek on the Appalachian Trail. Kind of cold and blustery, but still magical.

Some time in '96 - Climbed Katahdin many times before.
Long time ago, date is real fuzzy, but did Katahdin leaving from Chimney Pond up to Pamola over the Knife Edge (it wasn't that bad, I loved it) and then down Cathedral Trail. Hmm, need a repeat.

It was home range for a while
I lived in Millinocket from 1984 to 1990, and climbed Katahdin perhaps a dozen times via all the standard trails. The most memorable was our winter ascent over President's day weekend in 1986, via the Hunt Trail.
Did it as a kid with the boy scouts. What a great climb!

Armadillo gulley
After spending too much time in the approach cliff bands, bailed out of the Armadillo and climbed the horrendously loose 4th class stuff to its right directly to the summit. Not a recommended route.

Knife Edge: Climbed multiple times when I was a kid
Growing up in Maine this was the king of the mountains. My Dad took me up this a number of times when I was younger. The Knife Edge probably got me hooked on scrambling for the rest of my life.

Fun Climb and a Beautiful Day!
Scrambled up the Cathedral Ridge route which was a blast and then descended via the Knife Edge (also a ton of fun). Overall, we couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable day on the mountain-crystal clear blue skies all day and views as far as the eye could see. Katahdin was the most fun I've had climbing on the east coast!

Abol Trail
HP #26! It was a beautiful day to climb the Big K. Abol Trail was the only trail open due to snow and ice on the others. Hiked with Paul and we enjoyed views from the top as well as our traditional Reese's Peanut Butter Cups--yum! Steep and rocky, but what a mountain!!

childhood dream
I originally planned to go in April, 1971. Trip after trip was cancelled, then as luck would have it, my brother-in-law got married in Maine...
My wife and I went up an easy route to the top, then went back on the knife edge. Before we started off on the edge, she turned to me and said, "I want you to know I'm doing this only because I love you".

Snow in June
From their lake side wedding site South of Mt. Katahdin there appeared to be a snow patch close to Baxter Peak. Later as we crossed Table Land on the Appalacian Trail my daughter-in-law would not let me leave the trail to investigate.

3 trips to the Greatest
I have summited Katahdin three times once in 2005 and two times in 2006. My most successful was on the date posted. Me and two of my friends hiked all of the Maine AT and got a great day on the Mountain, amazing expirence! The university of Maine at Farmington outing club also made the trip up the mountain this past October with 24 people. The leaves colors in Baxter were great, and the whole group summited without injury, great mountain... go HIKE KATAHDIN!
