Torreys via kelso Ridge
Started at winter lot at 6:45 am. Reached base of ridge around 10:30. Winds picked up substantially on the ridge. Lots of snow but some windswept areas, crampons and ice axe required. Summited at 2pm descended via Grays peak trail reached car at 5:30. Super fun and challenging route, had the place to myself.
Excellent scramble, especially considering its length and proximity to the Front Range. It's a great way to get away from the throngs on the mountain. Still this is a "busy scramble" route: the climbers' trail is great the whole way with only a couple sections where one really has to search for the best path forward.
A good route. I did not carry any beta with me and only got off route twice. Once low when a track heads south (left around the ridge). Go UP, haha. It eventually led to 5th class so I retreated and got back on route. Then again off route at the 40 foot buttress. Still 14k feet. I went right/north (instead of up, or south) into a gully and it was loose but not too steep (4th). It joined back up with the normal route right below the knife edge, which is easy and short (the loose gully was a lot scarier).
Great way to get away from the swarms of people on the mountain.

Fun Day
1st time on Kelso Ridge, fun day, we have to almost run from the mountain to dodge storm coming in.

Didn't meet any one till the descent...had the whole thing to myself. Played around "off route" a little, but stayed right on the ridge mostly...

One of my favorites
Ascened Kelso Ridge to Torreys, took the trail to Grays, and descended via the standard route. One of my favorite 14er routes; done it five times but the views never get old.

Fun scramble
Found this route more enjoyable than the standard one. One of my favorite scrambles.!
Very fun climb. Scrambled some exposed sections but not as difficult as I thought it'd be.
The knife edge gives to this route a nice ending. I found myself below Torreys summit as soon as I negociated it.
- 2 hours from TH to summit.
- Hit Grays after Torreys.
- The descend took me longer. Had to yield to the upward crowd.
- Had fun!

Big Fun
The section past the quartzite pillars was snow to the summit, made for a nice finish. The glissade from the saddle saved around 800 vertical of down climbing.

Fun alpinish winter climb
The three of us drove as far as we could up the road, then hiked a couple miles to the trailhead. Made it to the ridge at sunup. It was pretty well blown dry on the windward side and would have made for an easier hike - and did for some sections - but we tried to stay as direct as possible. We protected through some 3/4 class sections that were snowy and icy or just exposed. Put some crampons on for the last snow section to the summit above Dead Dog Couloir's topout. Crossed over the ridge from the summit (a little cornicing) and came down Gray's. Windy. Great view. Super fun.
On memorial weekend this route was awesome! Doing it Solo meant that I had the entire ridge to myself while there was huge congo line up the Grays Peak Trail. (Solo)
