Snowing at the Top!
A great day, doing the traverse from Elk to Kings. Started out beautiful with the sun out. At the top of Kings, it was snowing -just for a moment, then sunny again!

Kings after Elk...
I Tagged Kings after tagging Elk. Weather was dry. No volcano views. If you've got nothing else going on, this is a great conditioning hike. Don't forget you trekking poles.

The best sunset ever
Left the car at 5:00 reached the summit of Kings Mountain Jr a little before 6:00 and hit the summit of Kings Mountain just in time for the sunset. It was so amazing I had to stay on top for close to an hour watching it. Then I had a nice descent under the stars.
Have ascended five times, once in 1987 and again in 1988 as part of the Elk-Kings traverse. Add another ascent, December 2006 with my son. Beautiful day, about 6" of snow at the summit. Add one more ascent via the west ridge April 2007. Still one more via Elk-Kings traverse May 2007.

Wet and Foggy
Wet and foggy day. No veiws from the summit... Decided not to do loop, because of the rain, and the steepness of the pinacle area, and hiked Elk Mnt. seperatly on the same day.

Climbed with Infected Mushroom, no views do to poor weather but still a great hike.
Hiked up the east ridge to summit in a thick mist, next morning hiked up the King's mtn trail for the elk/kings combination trail.

Route Climbed: Kings Mountain Trail
Climbed as part of the Mazamas AYM conditioning series. There was a lot of snow on the ground, which actually made the descent easy as you could just slide down some of the descents. A lot of fun!
Wonderful Easter hike as a conditioner for the Mazamas' BCEP program. The hike leader, one other student and I made it through the top, kick-stepping the first tracks through a foot and a half (!!) of brand-new powdery snow (it seemed plenty of other people were headed up later in the day, though). It was a beautiful wintry wonderland (in mid-April nonetheless). Had some beautiful blue sky sunbreaks along with some thick snowfall.

A little bit of fog and snow at the top. My first time here. Was excited to go on further to Elk Mtn, but with snow and late timing, must try again this summer!

King's Mt. Trail
Driving East on Hwy.6 to the trailhead the rain started dumping, after gearing up in the van, the rain all but stopped. Thank God.
When we stated the parking lot was empty, when we returned not a space available.
After 1500 feet we hit old snow and new snow started falling.
At the top, old bucket holes being covered by the dumping new snow made walking tricky.
The weather didn't keep us away, or the 15 people and 3 dogs we passed on our way down.
Decent little hike, one of my first after I moved to Oregon. Had great weather that day and the views from the summit were pretty good. Good hike to get you in shape.

Kings Mtn Trail, Coxcomb Ridge
Great day on Kings Mountain. Cold, lots of snow, and killer views from Mt. Hood to the Ocean. Fresh cougar tracks in the snow just below the summit as well. There is a sign nailed to a tree pointing the way to the Coxcomb Ridge, so I headed that way on the way down. The sign is really more of a suggestion- not a real well-marked trail. By sheer luck, I made it to-and down- the ridge. What an amazing route! A little scary with slippery snow, and hard to find any trail but worth the effort.

Climbed this mountain as a training hike for Hood. Quite an elevation gain in 3 miles. The weather was foggy, drizzly, and we couldn't see hardly anything from the summit. Guess I'll have to do it again when the weather gets nicer.
Route Climbed: KMT trailhead to summit Date Climbed: January 23, 2006
Great first hike of 2006. Took 3 hours to reach the summit, including a longish lunch at the picnic table. Great view from the top (see the photo page). I have hiked Kings perhaps 200 times and almost always summit in 2 hours but the wet winter has kept me indoors and I've gotten soft. :(
Coming down, we tried to find the Kings Mt. Jr. Trail, which intersects KMT at 2200 feet. We quickly became lost in the salal and Oregon grape and diffuse trails which weren’t marked in any way. Our next hike will be another attempt when there is more time to go exploring.
There were no wildflowers blooming. Got a shot of rock lettuce which was putting out its reproductive bodies.
I've pretty much adopted Kings mountain as my own personal project. I'm writing a book about its wildflowers (80 species, so far). Also, I would like to install a bench at the summit.

Colleen and I tried to burn off the extra calories taken in on Thanksgiving...
Started out a bit foggy but had a few breaks at the top. Never saw Elk Mtn from the summit. Had about 1 1/2" of snow from about 3000'
We'd have went on to Elk Mtn. but I have never done the whole loop and we got a late start so we went back to our hotel room in Lincoln City to watch the storms roll in...

Climbed this mountain as part three of a trilogy: Saddle Mtn., Neah-Kah-Nie, and Kings in a day. The line this trail takes is awesome--definitely a challenge after the first two mountains. I would recommend trekking poles if you value your knees.
