Multnomah Falls
I was joined on the first part of the trail by a bus load of school children from Beaverton Junior High. Nice waterfalls on this hike. I made it to the summit in the rain and clouds even though it started out as a sunny day. It was still a nice mountain to climb.

Cold & Wet on Larch Mtn.
Climbed from Multanomah falls on a wet May day. Heavy rain & mist on the summit obscured all views. Suggest all spring climbers to be fully prepared for how cold it gets when you're on snow, soaked, it's 35 degrees up top, and the wind is blowing! Heard some suspicious (Sasquatch?) low repeated whistling noises parallelling me from 3k to 3.8k vert, both up and down, and some large animal breathing..uh oh..need to acclimatize better next time.
That low pitched whisteling noise is the mating call of the "mountain chickens".. Or grouse as they are also known as... As far as the large animal breathing, I too have heard this, but usually it's actually me.... How funny how the mind can wander sometimes when you are hiking solo....

Nice hike! I ran into some rain towards the end of the hike when I went but still had a good time. It really sucks that there is a road to with in 1/4 mile of the summit, but the views are still pretty good even though you'll probably share the summit with some tourists. Great hike to get some exercise or train for a bigger summit.

Route Hiked From Falls to point.
Started out at the Main Falls, sloging through the crowds (it was a nice day), but they thinned out pretty quick after the lookout for Multnomah Falls. Ran into a group of semi drunk people claiming that the snow was higher than waist level further up on the trail. (they where full of it, the snow was only 6-8 inches deep, and had clear foot prints to follow) the last few miles where a little tough because of the snow, and I could have used my snow shoes if I brought some. Once I got to the top of the point, I realized that my jacket, that I had strapped to the back of my daypack was missing (which had my car keys, and celphone in it's pocket) and I started to freak out a little, so I was not able to soak in the views too much. Luckly I found my jacket back on the trail not too far from the point. The snow at the point was pretty high, and the fence was barly visible, so you gotta be a little carfull that you dont fall down the cliff down to the meadow below.
Took the long walk back, which was alot faster going down that going up. This is a great hike, but a little long. Next time I am gonna try going around thrugh Multnomah spur and check out the mash after the snow melts later this year.
A little tired and dark back at the falls, but was well worth it.
Gonna do this one a few more time this year.
Route Climbed: From Multnomah Falls Date Climbed: 1989?
I'm guessing on the date. Not my favorite trail in the gorge, very rocky, hiking boots a definite need. The 7 miles up was a bit of a stretch for me as this was towards the beginning of my hiking career. I hiked with my sister Julie, we had no idea there was a road at the top. We stumbled out of the woods to find not only a road, but a paved road, with lines, a parking lot and bathrooms!! I took my husband back the next weekend to show him the spectacular views via this nice paved road.
Next I want to do the loop trail around the top of this, or one of the many loops possible in the area. Kudos to Don whose hiked this over 50 times! Wow I'm impressed.

This is one of the most scenic hikes I have ever been on! The day I hiked this the temperature in Portland was approaching 95 degrees, but it seemed like it was 20 degees cooler while on this trail. There are some very nice sidetrails to Horsetail falls and other areas. The hike is a fairly steady climb the entire way up and most of it is shaded with old growth trees. I was slightly disappointed with the top of the peak, since there is a road that leads to the top of the peak and deflated my sense of being out in the open wilderness. My disappointment was quickly forgotten when I got to the observation platform and was amazed at the view! The views of Mt Rainier, Mt St Helens, Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson and Mt Adams are awesome! This is a hike that is well worth doing, especially on a clear day.

I Left for Multnomah falls at 7:30am from Salem, OR, stopping briefly for coffee and to pick up a friend in Portland. We began hiking at exactly 9:00am and summited around 12:30pm. The hike was beautiful and chilly as an erie mist enveloped the last 500' or so vertical feet before we reached the summit. There was no view whatsoever although the lookout was very chill and serene. I will definatley come back to this spot with my wife on a clearer day to view the five peaks I was not able to see. Nearly 14 miles even in 6.5 hours time (including lunch).

Route Climbed: West trail, Larch Mountain trail from Multnomah Falls Date Climbed: multiple
3/27/05 - After failing on my bid to do a peak in the Wind River area earlier in the morning due to swollen and impassable creeks, I hit this one on the drive home. Drove to about the 3000 foot mark and picked up a trail from the road that goes up the west side. Up and down in about an hour and a half. Up on top, there was a family about to spread the ashes of a relative and the prevailing wind was headed my way so I spent all of 2 seconds up there and headed back down. Rained all the live long day. Would like to come back and do the loop around the crater as well as the route up from Multnomah Falls. Will do that one as a nice trainer at a later date.
4/3/05 - Went back to do this one on the "real" trail since weather was crappy everywhere. Rain and more rain from the Falls up to about 3000 feet. Then, hiked on snow in rain that turned to snow a few hundred feet higher. Lots of snow up top. First one to summit that day according to the fresh smooth snow. Wonder how many waterfalls there are on this hike. So many of them, I lost count. Great way to get over 4000 feet in on a crummy weather day.
12/3/05 - With Mark and Natasha, drove as far to the West trailhead as we could get, about mile marker 8. Then hiked about 3 miles in to the trailhead. Heavy snow down and more coming down. Snowshoed up to about 3900 feet. Hard freaking work breaking trail but a great workout for us all. Took us an hour and a half to go about a mile in the thigh-deep powder. Turned around and on the way down could hear trees breaking and falling down in the heavy snow. One fell right behind us on the road as we hiked out, another had fallen on the car parked a few feet in front of us. Several new ones criss crossed the road as we drove out.
April 2015 - don't remember it but I did it again then
6/5/16 Super hot day. But a beautiful hike once you get above the tourons at the big falls/lodge area. Up in 3:02, down in 1:53. Talked to a Scottish guy and his friend who had biked up there in the morning from North Portland.
Later in June 2016 with Diane, Luna and Ramsey, looped the crater in which I had never done before. Cool, except for all the people.

It was a great day with good friends.

Very nice hike with Shelby. Interesting to watch the plant species/communities change as you go up from sea level to 4,000 ft. Last mile was under snow, but route finding was easy. Cloudy day, but still enjoyed the view 4K down to the river. Rained on us much of the way back down, might have actually added to our enjoyment. Highly recomended, beautiful area!

This was a pretty neat hike, past some beautiful gorge scenery to a pretty nice view from Jefferson to Rainier, but it is a little too crowded at Multnomah Falls, and at the top for my taste. Would be more fun to do this in the winter when the road to do this the easy way is closed by snow.
