After Big Baldy  Sucess!

After going up Dry Canyon and to the summit of Big Baldy we made our way over to Little Baldy and then down the Little Baldy trail. The loop was long but fun.

Trail 033 from the Dry Canyon trail at @7,900'  Sucess!

#1 05-03-24 W/Lana. After bagging Big Baldy we took trail 033 from the sign which says the Dry Canyon TH is 2.5 miles down. Some snow on the 3 or 4 gully crossings but manageable. Deviated from the trail at what we called the base of the Little Baldy summit. We climbed almost directly up on snow. Peak #26 in my 80in80 quest.

Spring skiing

Hiked the Dry Canyon trail to the Baldy saddle. Took snowshoes but didn't really need them. In years with average or more snowfall, you definitely need snowshoes. '21 was a dry year but there was still plenty of snow above the great Western trail. Took several runs from the Baldy saddle down to the gwt. Good times!

Dry Canyon to Trail 33 (aka GWT)  Sucess!

July 22, 2023 I reached the top of Little Baldy via Dry Canyon. Encountered a baby rattlesnake just shy of the east peak. On the west most peak, located at N 40.35519 W 111.65371, (which seemed to be to be shorter than the east most peak) I found an ammo box containing a summit log. Required 2.5 hours to hike up and 1.5 hours to hike down (via a bushwhack shortcut). I had attempted it on July 9 via the Great Western Trail (aka trail 033) from Canyon Glen but after reaching the Altar the plethora of bike trails crisscrossing all over the place distracted me and I lost trail 33. Upon realizing my mistake, time was short as I had no desire to be out in the extremer heat of the day, thus I decided to abandon the July 9 attempt. What I call the east peak is point A on this map, and point B is what I call the west peak.

via Dry Canyon

with WMC group on snowshoes - up Dry Canyon, to Little Baldy Pass, then west over summit ridge. Deceptively difficult route-finding with arroyo crossings in upper Dry Canyon and LB ridge travel on the rest. Snow made easier what would have been extensive bushwhacking, I'm sure. Big Baldy seemed almost easier in retrospect.

Great Western Trail - Horse Trail Loop  Sucess!

We took the great western trail up to the saddle and then hit the top. On the way down we saw a trail in the snow and decided to take it down. It was much more direct, but it had many intersections with the myriad of biking trails.

This was a fun hike in a storm. Just let it happen.

Long Hike, Amazing Results  Sucess!

This hike is very unique in many aspects. The long approach that is in the low foothills, and deciduous trees, and flat for the Wasatch makes you feel you are in the golden hills of California. The views of the surrounding terrain is gorgeous, and incredible that you are only miles from an urban center. We took the trail from the pipe on the staircase trail and came down the horse trail. I would suggest going up the Great Western Trail. There was a few inches of snow on the top, and light snow falling, what a perfect winter hike, but as it gets deeper, snow shoes would be wanted. I don't imagine this higher terrain having much traffic in the winter. Oh yeah, this was my third attempt at this summit, the other two times I was turned back by too deep of snow in the spring, and no gear appropriate for it. Nemesis done!

Bush wack deluxe  Sucess!

Finally bagged this one. Ascended via the Dry Canyon trail then descended on the south side via trail 51 back to the Dry Canyon trail. I wish the forest service could spend more time maintaining trails and putting signs at trail junctions. Took wrong trail three different times. Also did some serious bushwacking on the final ascent to Little Baldy.

Horse Trail Route Sledding Down Dry Canyon  Sucess!

Danny Moody and I hiked up the Horse trail route and dang did it take forever to summit, even with snowshoes. We proceeded down (sledding) the Saddle route on the other side to the Great Western trail to Dry Canyon, which we pretty much sledded all the way down! 5 1/2 hours of pure blissful pain!
