Alone in winter
Hiked from Sylvan Lake to Little Devils Tower many times, but last winter was the most extreme. A foot of solid packed snow made for an easy hike, but it started snowing and blowing on top. Got lost on top and saw only cliffs every where I looked until I finally found my footprints and got out of there. Hiking the Black Hills in the winter is awesome.
Originally had planned to hike Harney Peak, but decided to do this hike instead due to time constraints. Not really knowing what to expect, we were shocked at the amazing views from the top. Well worth the hour and half hike!

Standard Route
Via the No. 4 trail branch. We climbed this after descending from Harney Peak. Great views. Fun scrambling. The route is marked all the way.

From Sylvan Lake
Spent quite a bit of time in the Black Hills over the course of my 3 seasons at Wind Cave National Park. Hiked/scrambled up with my wife, daughter, and the dog. My 8 year old daughter loved scrambling up the final section.

Little Devil's Tower
Doublebagged this one along with Harney. Wanted to have an uncluttered summit to stand on and this fit the bill nicely. Short and steep, but worth the effort with some fun scrambling and bouldering at the summit!

Surprising!
Surprisingly beautiful...Surprised to see a handsome mountain goat halfway up...Surprised to meet an 80-year old man on the summit.

Above The Clouds
The Little Devils Tower trail head was our starting point. We passed people going both ways on the trail. It took us about 40 minutes to get to the top. When we arrived at the top, we were treated to some great views of the clouds rolling in from the east, eventually obscuring our view of many parts of the valley below. Our next stop was Harney Peak.

My wife and I climbed this Black Hills beauty by mistake in July of 1998. Missed the turnoff to Harney Peak! We were still very rewarded with great views and a colony of lady bugs on the summit rocks. Great way to cap off a trip to the Black Hills.
Only one set of footprints preceeded me up and down the trail to the top of Little Devils Tower. The down prints had occasional bloodspots , so whoever went, must have gotten a pretty good scrape near the top. Six to eight inches of snow, plus sunshine and warming temps made the trail very slick coming down. But, it was really beautiful (see photos).
