Followed the road to the old quarry, headed up the west/lefthand side and up steep slopes on the western side (minimal 'schwacking) to the ridgetop. Observed an old trail (animal trail?) on the south side along the road which may be easier access. There did appear to be an old trail along the top heading to some rock formations on the eastern end with views of the surrounding peaks. Dropped back down the east side of Lone Butte stopping off at another cool rock overlook visible below.
Route Climbed: South Side Date Climbed: February, 2003
this was my second snowshoe climb. A pretty easy hike to the quarry, then bushwacked my way up to the right side of the quarry and eventually to the summit and had great views of Rainier, Adams, Saint Helens, Hood, and Jefferson. i didn't see anyone other than a couple snowmobilers on the approach.
Went back with snowshoes this time to make sure I summitted. Buzzed up the trail to the quarry site and then started bushwhacking up the south ridge which is actually quite broad. Kept climbing the ridge until I crawled up on top of what I thought was a snowcovered tree. Turned out to be the summit block. Had climbed in fog and light snow but up top the clouds started breaking up. Didn't get the great views of the Big 4 Stratovolcanoes surrounding this peak though as the clouds didn't break up that much until about 5:30 pm and by then I was back at the parking lot.
