Various ascents  Sucess!

Climbed 16 times:

2/13/16 - Strong group with the Wasatch Mountain Club.

9/26/15 - Via Cherry Canyon. Shorts and T-shirt in late September.

10/16/10 - First peak of the Hematoma Quad with Jake and Matt.

3/12/10 - A bluebird day. Did a crawl to bypass one of the summit ridge rocks. It wasn't pretty but it worked.

2/20/09 - One of the nicest weather days I've ever had up there. Lots of snow on the summit - only room for one at a time.

10/18/08 - Climbed with Robert and Matt. Our original plan was to climb via the Orson Smith TH / Cherry Canyon trail, but there was a lot of snow on the upper mountain so we contoured over to Draper Ridge to complete the hike. Super nice day.

08/02/08 - Climbed from Bells Canyon with Robert. Peak #1 of the Hematoma Quad.

04/26/08: First ascent via Big Willow route. Celebrated Grizz's 100th ascent of the peak.

01/20/07: Winter ascent with the Wasatch Mountain Club via Cherry Canyon. Skies were totally clear entering the cirque but deteriorated to near-whiteout conditions on the summit, and snowed during the entire descent. Trip Report.

07/29/06 - Solo hike via Bells Canyon. Climbed North Thunder first, then traversed over South Thunder and Bighorn to Lone. Descended by backtracking to the Lone/Bighorn saddle, then dropped back into Bells Canyon.

01/22/06 - First winter ascent of the peak with the Wasatch Mountain Club, via Cherry Canyon/Draper Ridge. Low lying clouds down low, but crystal clear skies from the cirque on up. Beautiful day. Trip Report.

10/16/04 - Final peak of the day, after ascending Coalpit Gulch to North Thunder Mountain, then making the traverse to South Thunder and Bighorn. Descended via Cherry Canyon.

08/07/04 - Climbed solo via Cherry Canyon, then traversed over Bighorn, South Thunder, Chipman, and finished with the Pfeifferhorn. I began the hike with delusions of going all the way to Snowbird, but I wimped out upon reaching the Pfeifferhorn and descended down Red Pine Canyon.

07/01/04 - Climbed solo via Cherry Canyon, a much more pleasant route than my two previous ascents.

08/23/03 - via Draper Ridge (yuck). Badly overgrown and eroded trail down low, but we miraculously managed to stay on route.

09/03/00 - First ascent of the peak, via Jacob's Ladder. Got off route early but eventually got back on the trail. Nice to finally get on top after thinking about it for many years.

Lone Peak  Sucess!

Climbed via Jacob's Ladder - the wind up at the cirque was awful but calmed down at the ridge and on the summit. Beautiful hike and wonderful views down to the Salt Lake and Provo valleys.

Beautiful, epic  Sucess!

We studied several possible routes for this hike and settled on ascending via the Jacobs Ladder Trail and descending via the Cherry Canyon Logging Trail. I will provide a more detailed trip report in the reports section, but here are some bullet points for those seeking some quick info:

- our route was longer than expected -- 17 miles round trip (details in trip report)

- many hikers advise that you carry more water than you will think you need. Wise advice! (details in trip report)

- There was snow from about 10,000 feet up. We hit it late in the morning when the sun had turned it soft; hikers who arrived at the snow fields much earlier turned back because it was too hard and treacherous to traverse; my taller/heavier climbing partner post-holed to his shins frequently, while I sunk only a few inches most of the time

- I'm an experienced hiker, but a lowlander -- I flew in from my home at 900 feet the day before -- so I hiked slowly -- about 11 hours. Our local well-acclimated companion probably could have knocked off the hike much more quickly if he wasn't waiting for me

- the true scramble (and best part of this hike) begins about 800 feet below the summit elevation. It's incredible if you (like me) have a foolishly absent fear of heights, a little scary if you're nervous about making rock climbing moves without ropes with giant exposures on either side, and probably absolutely terrifyingly un-doable if you have a genuine fear of heights.

- the Jacob's Ladder Trail is very well marked all the way to the cirque (bowl) that lies immediately below the final peak; the Cherry Canyon Logging Trail is far less obvious except at lower elevations. We used GPX tracks that I found online, which were very helpful

8/10/2009 Jacob's Ladder to Outlaw Cabin to Lone Peak
3/13/2009 A perfect day--there was no wind! Not even on Draper Ridge. I could have spent the entire day in short s and a t-shirt it was so pleasant up there. I climbed with Scott Wesemann by way of the Cherry Canyon trail, then connect with Draper Ridge, then through Cowboy Camp and the cirque. I was successful in summiting. This was making right the "unfinished business" from January when a group of us came oh-so-close to summiting Lone Peak in a blowing white-out.

Also climbed:

10/18/2008 with Joe Bullough & Robert Koch on a sunny day
8/9/2008 Orson Smith TH through cirque
4/26/2008 Grizz's 100th, with Grizz, Joe B, MOCKBA, Michael H., Brent W., Ammon Hatch

Perfect Indian Summer Day  Sucess!

This peak has been at the top of my suggested mountains for probably two years. It was kind of like the Harry Potter books. It was so popular that I didn't want to seem like a guy jumping on the bandwagon. But let me just say it was worth it.

Also, when they say the trail is steep, they weren't kidding. It reminded me of Borah, but much longer. The trail kind of turns into a cairn dump past Cowboy Flats, but since you can see the top you can just go whichever way you most desire.

The best part is the scrambling near the summit. It'll wake you up in the morning. I only wish it was longer. I sat on top and ate a spicy sandwich. It seems to me that spicy is the only thing I can eat when elevation chases my hunger away.

Thanks mountain, for a delightful Sunday.

2nd of 3  Sucess!

Climbed from Suncrest, went up Ennis Peak on the way up. The cirque was nice. No one up that day due to the dark clouds. Rained and hailed on us near the top but still had awesome views of Salt Lake and the surrounding mountains! Also hit the South summit. Very exposed but doable.

Fun ridge!  Sucess!

My Grandpa, Dad and I headed up Jacob's Ladder to check out Lone Peak. Grandpa decided to stay down lower at the Cowboy Camp area while my dad and I headed up to Lone. It was tiring hiking up into the cirque area after having gone up Jacobs Ladder. Dad gave me some of his Gu energy shots and that helped. One getting up on the ridge being able to see the other peaks to the east, and the final ridge scramble, I was happy. The ridge section to the peak was fun! Dad helped me over some spots, though I did the rest on my own. We didn't stay on the top very long because of big storm clouds over the valley. I am so happy.

I Love Lone Peak  Sucess!

The day I climbed Lone Peak via Jacob's Ladder was the same day I told my then-boyfriend, Ammon Hatch, that I love him. We're now married, and Lone Peak was on our wedding invitations and in our wedding pictures. This peak is near and dear to my heart.

Fun peak  Sucess!

15 times

1/25/2014 with WMC. Easy peasy thanks to MVH et al.

1/26/2013 With WMC. 8 people made the summit. It would have been a perfect day except that I spilled 32oz of Coke in my car on the way to the TH.

2/4/2012 With WMC including SPers Moogie737, Phenom, Mooner, Lubos, and Matthew Van Horn. Great group, great conditions, beautiful weather.

2/12/2011 With WMC. At the base of the big bad rock the snow was hollow and Dave made a hole, first unintentionally, then intentionally to get down to the crawl space to the east.

4/27/2010 Via Big Willow. Christine and I slithered. Dave and Moogie737 jumped. Conditions were great except for the nuking winds. But by some miracle they were calm on the most difficult part of the ridge.

3/12/2010 I loved the belly crawl under the overhang of the big, bad rock. Perfect day.

2/21/2009 With Dmitry, Joe, Michael, Dave, Grizz, Shelly, and Lee. A simply gorgeous day. Not windy at all. Warm but not uncomfortably so.

1/26/2008 With the WMC and summitposters. Not bad except for the big bad rock which required a big jump down and assistance up.

9/8/2007 Via Cherry Canyon Logging Trail after a 4 year absence.

9/6/2003 With WMC, led by Mohammed. Went up Big Willow and headed for the notch just S of 10561. This was not a good place to be with 12 people as the ones in the front were sending rocks down on those below. Went through the notch and traversed S a short distance to a gully that was followed to the main ridge and on to the summit. On the way down, we descended the scree slope into Big Willow Canyon. I put my hand out for balance at one point and that was enough to dislodge a large rock onto the back of my head. It knocked me over and I did a 360 but was able to hike out. Initially, I thought I should drive myself to the ER right away. Then I decided to go home and get my insurance info first. But, once I was home I figured I might as well eat and then figured I might as well take a shower, but I didn't want to mess with my head which was all bandaged up, so I didn't wash my hair. I should have because they had to do it at the hospital because I had so much blood matted in it they couldn't get through to my scalp. Also, I should note that at the hospital they separated me from my husband and grilled me to determine whether or not I was a battered wife.

8/31/2002 From Alpine. Also did Upper Bells Peak.

5/19/2001 From Alpine with MM.

10/7/2000 From Alpine with MM. Also did Upper Bells Peak.

11/23/1999 From Alpine with MM. Also did Upper Bells Peak. An awkward amound of snow.

7/17/1999 Via Draper Ridge Trail with lesdubois. It was clear on the way up, but clouds rolled in as we were descending and we were completely fogged in. Followed the wrong set of cairns and since some people would rather die than backtrack ended up doing a horrible 2 hour plus bushwhack to get to the Jacobs Ladder Trail which we followed back.

Jacobs Ladder Route  Sucess!

What an epic hike! We've had this peak in our sights for some time now, glad we finally made it! Amazing workout and super fun class 3-4 scrambling at the top. Met a guy up there that was kind enough to show us the best route through the scrambling section, he had summited Lone Peak 30 times! Wish I had gotten his name. Also ran into an old friend on the summit, what a day!!

Hard but fun!

Via Jacobs Ladder, we started late since we could not find the trail, once there we were following a trail that took us some were far from the base of the peak. Still we hike up and down for some hours. May try soon again.

Via Jacob's Ladder  Sucess!

Had planned a prudent alpine start, but trouble finding the trailhead put me on the dirt at just about 645 AM.

Maybe one of the more scenic runs I've had in recent memory. Sage brush and scrub oak yields to spruce and pine, making it almost feel like the Sierras in a miniature.

A few poor route-finding decisions in the boulder fields and meadows (read: too many cairns) thwarted my attempt to make the summit in under 2h30 minutes. Oh well. I basked on the summit much longer than is my custom and made it back to car in 5h.

Thinking next time I will surprise a climbing group with a harness and a hangdog expression and see if they'll pity-belay me up the "fun" stuff.

Lone via Lowe  Sucess!

First time to Lone Peak Cirque, two day trip. Hiked in from Alpine so we could hit a spring due to no water in the cirque. Approach was steep and at times very dusty, saw a rattler on the way out. Despite all that, excellent views, excellent rock, awesome time! Lowe route is classic all the way from the comfy belays to the easy descent. My husband was nice enough to give me all the good leads :) Scramble over to the top was quick and easy. Highly recommended way for climbers to hit the top.

Great trip. Excellent workout.  Sucess!

Went up Jacob's Ladder with a co-worker. Even though it was my sixth trip to the summit and my eighth time hiking Lone Peak, I still managed to allow us to get a bit off on the way back down. We ended up far to the south, and had to do some grueling uphill climbing to get back on the trail that heads west out to the steep descent down Jacob's Ladder. We probably added a 1000 feet of extra climbing and descending to our trip, but we had a great time, and our fast time to the summit allowed us to have a bit of leeway on the trip down.

Lowe Route  Sucess!

Started at the trail head in Alpine, and took the climbers trail from the spring (carried water to the cirque), won't do that again. Amazing place, amazing rock. Climbed the Lowe Route (highly recommended) with my rope gun wife. Route was great bottom to top with comfy belays. Scrambled over to the top and a great down climb/rap back to camp. Three BIG stars!

Jacob's Ladder  Sucess!

Jacob's Ladder trail is ugly - nice after the junction w/ Draper Ridge.

Summit scramble was fun but a bit of a letdown. I think the exposure and difficulty are overemphasized although it is a long day. The summit is certainly exposed. Camera took a tumble off the summit and landed on a ledge below, mostly intact!

About 7 hr round trip - summited in 3:40.
