Last of five  Sucess!

Made it to this summit after ten hours of hiking from Elk Lake to the summit of Dix and then along the entire ridge just in time for headlamp o' clock. Descending the slide area in the dark was tricky enough to make me lose the trail so I used Slide Brook to descend for a bit until I could climb the slope and find the actual trail. While in the stream I rolled my ankle pretty good, which made me hobble for a few minutes. Still, it added another two hours onto an already long twelve hour day for fourteen total hours car to car, which considering I only spent forty minutes of rest breaks at various summits was really pretty slow. I did have food poisoning two days earlier but still...

Dix Range Traverse  Sucess!

About 20 miles of horrible snow conditions, brutal mountain ascents and descents, and unmarked, untamed wilderness. You know you're on an epic when you leave camp at 7:30 am and don't return until 11:00 pm. With that said, adding five more 46ers, getting awesome weather, and experiencing killer views made it all worth it!

4 Peak Day  Sucess!

Hiked up Macomb Mt on a beautiful day. The trail to was easy to follow once I found it. It starts at a camping spot off the main trail, marked by a yellow disk, right after a small bridge. There was a log on the ground that said "Macomb" and pointed to the trail that led up the side of the brook. Moderate elevation gain until you get to the slide. Cool hike and not too far for a summit, 2 1/2 hours up. Followed up with South Dix, East Dix, then Hough Peak. Returned via Lillian Brook trail for a nice loop hike. 9 1/2 hours total for me.

Macomb was dangerous  Sucess!

I chose to hike Macomb last after climbing Hough, South, and Grace. When I returned to South Dix to descend to Macomb I was tired and a bit concerned about hiking out in the dark it was 5 pm. To make a long story short, I reached the summit of Macomb and began the descent. A gentleman had said to me earlier that it would be tough going....he did not lie. Every rock on the new slide was loose. It was torture, I was tired, and it was getting dark fast. I hugged the south side of the slide using the spruce for support when the tallus gave with nearly every step. Then it got worse. I missed the cairn that marked the trail exiting the slide and continued down the brook. NOTE: There are at least three rock cairns in the middle of the slide that are meant to indicate the trail leaving the slide. The trail is on the North side of the slide. If you descend into the brook too far you should bushwack north to the trail! The brook amply named Slide Brook was a myriad of downed trees and loose rocks, plunging cascades and gnarled stumps. It was gods obstacle course and I ran it until the sun faded. I was loosing hope when my hand came upon a rope tied to a tree. I immediately thought, "People". I had reached the elevation I knew the trail must be (1900 ft) and since I had found the rope as well I decided to try my luck at calling out for help.....5 minutes later a headlamp appeared and I was shown the trail by a helpful young guy named Jason. I was 100yds. from the bridge. I ate M&M's drank iodine purified water and walked the last 2.3 miles out......
What should be said about this hike that I left out.......I found myself once again mesmerized by the beauty of our massive Adirondack Park. We are truly blessed by this testament to stewardship and preservation. Teddy Roosevelt would be proud of the efforts we have made to preserve these wild places. The trail that I took to the top of Hough was rugged yet serene. Much of the hike followed Lillian Brook which of course provided it's soothing background sounds. Hough was one of my favorite views to date! The Beck-horn reminds me of the Matterhorn and Whiteface. Beautiful! South Dix was where I ate Linner. The view there was alright however Dix was obscured by Hough so it was like Hough's view without the Beck-horn. Grace Hudowalski's namesake peak (renamed June 2014 from East Dix to Grace) had a pleasant view not only of the rest of the range but also of the East to Lake Champlain and Vermonts' Green Mountains. Macomb was tough....mentally and physically. I descended bare rock to the col between South Dix and Macomb and I just wanted to hike down and out....the rest of the story is that I hit my head on an overhanging tree going up Macomb because I was too fatigued to be alert. I have a couple of distinct forehead markings as a result. Macomb beat chewed me up and spit me out. I always tell the kids that when something hurts or is difficult, that it builds character.....Macomb did that. It also did not kill me, therefore it made me stronger. What a great hike. Thank you god for the humility of this experience. Thank you also to Greg Bordeleau for the inspiration to see me through and out you were ever present in my thoughts.

All 5 in one day  Sucess!

Summited Macomb Mountain 4405' during a 2 night backpacking trip out in the Dix Range of the Adirondacks. We left our campsite at Slide Brook and followed the heard path that was marked with cairns to the base of the first rock slide around 8:45am. We summited the rock slide carefully, using our ice axes and crampons on some of the iced over sections. We made it to the summit around 10:15.

First ADK slide climb went great. Weather was hot but partly cloudy and views were great from the slide and summit! After hiking Dix last month I'm really starting to like the Dix Range, I'll go back to get the others soon.

Herds Path to New Slide  Sucess!

Went back to tag Macomb after cutting my March trip short. I was joined by my brother who had done Macomb as part of a Dix Range traverse before the hurricane. We decided to continue following Slide Brook down past the herds path (hopefully all the way to the marked trail). The blowdown along the brook gets very thick. I would strongly encourage taking the herds path. Still nothing like a little adventure in the woods.
