Windy Day on the Mountain
We camped at Geyser Pass. Michael forgot the tent poles so we slept under the stars. Early start. We wanted to go from Manns to Tomasaki but the winds were brutal so we only bagged one today. Beautiful range.

From Geyser Pass
Up via Burro Pass under pleasant conditions. Some clouds built up over the summit by noon, but not more.
#1 07-17-24 Solo. Parked at the spot where the 4-wheel drive road turns sharply west and hiked 1/2 mile to the Burro Pass TH ( yellow stairs/gate). Was pleasantly surprised to find the amount of work which had been done above Burro Pass to make the trail friendly. Enjoyed the nicely built rock shelter on top but didn't need it as the weather was very warm. Gathering clouds looked ominous so I decided not to go over to Tomasaki but instead head back to the pass and the car. I'm glad I did because the gathering clouds soon produced booming thunder. Below Burro Pass I walked down in a barrage of pea-sized hail for more than 10 minutes. I parked my car at an elevation of 10,222'. Next time I will plan to summit Manns and do the ridge walk over to Tomasaki. Manns was peak #63 in the 80in80 project. #2 09-13-24 W/Lana. Yikes, Friday the 13th! Camped near Geyser Pass. Unrelenting west winds above Burro Pass put the kibosh on our plans to do both Manns & Tomasaki. So Manns was it for this trip.

Manns Peak
February 10
After a scenic drive to the trailhead, Kim and I snowshoed in the dark to the Geyser Pass Yurt where we met Jordan, David, Mary, Bailey, and Doug who all went up on skis. We stayed up pretty late talking before going to bed. Doug and Jordan arrived earlier than the rest of us so had the yurt nice and warm before everyone else got there.
February 11
In the morning, Kim decided to stay behind in the yurt and everyone else but me decided to go skiing on the lower slopes of Mount Mellenthin and Burro Ridge.
Alone I set off and snowshoed around Burro Ridge to Burro Pass, breaking trail along much of the way. From Burro Pass I headed up the ridge to the summit of Manns Peak. It was windy and I enjoyed the spectacular views before heading back down to Burro Pass.
At Burro Pass, I decided to climb the North Face of Burro Ridge. Conditions were stable, but it was a rather sketchy ascent and I should have brought an ice axe and crampons. I broke through the small summit cornice and found myself within a few feet of the summit. I admired the views before heading down the south face of Burro Ridge and back to the yurt. In the yurt we leaned how to play Exploding Kittens. I'll let anyone who wants to look that one up.
February 12
In the late morning, we all skied or snowshoed back down to the trailhead before departing ways and heading for home.
We drove out from Gateway CO using Taylor Flatts road. We had to leave our car where Geyser Pass Road forks off to Geyser Creek Road, about 6 miles from Burro Pass. It was about a 15 miles roundtrip and about 3,500 ft. elevation gain. I have hiked this before from Warner Lake and definitely recommend the Burro Pass route. The last 1000 ft. in elevation gain are tough, there are some cool stairs that leave to a false summit. There was no trail for the last leg but you can clearly see where you need to go. The trail sing at Burro Pass says 1 mile to Manns but it is more like 1.7 miles. This is one of my favorite hikes. We only saw two other people the whole day and one USFS employee.

Route: Beavers Basin
1st summit of a 2 months wilderness stay. Camped out at Beaver Basin and preceded to climb up 1600 ish feet to ridge line just north north-west of Manns summit. Traversed counter clock wise and climbed from the south the remaining 250 or so feet. Much easier route down towards Burro Pass. Would recommend coming from Burro Pass however it can be climbed from the North just very exposed. Could see the Colorado Rockies from the top as well as Bears Ear National Monument, Pretty Cool!!
Loop from Burro Pass trailhead with PT 11641 (the one to the NE), Tomasaki and PT 11926. Overcast and some flurries later in the day, but still had amazing views!

Labor Day Weekend: Manns and Tomasaki
While the masses flooded my beloved Moab on Labor Day weekend, Ammon Hatch and I headed to the more remote La Sals. We climbed Manns Peak via Burro Pass, and we tagged on Mount Tomasaki just for the sake of it. We only saw one solo hiker during our hike, so if you're looking for someplace secluded next Labor Day then I recommend these peaks.
Oh, and bring a windbreaker.

Northern La Sal traverse
Started at Burro Pass TH and climbed Manns, 11849, Pilot (12220), Green (12163), Mount Waas, Castle Peak (12044), and La Sal Peak (12001). Returned the same way except that I skirted the tops of the peaks whenever I could.

Beatdown
Climbed the ridge of 12ers heading north from Geyser Pass- Tomasaki over to La Sal Peak.
Also returned on June 23, 2009 to climb Manns with my wife.
Climbed Tomaski from Geyser pass then traversed ridges to summit Manns and then Wass. After you have done the "triple crown" of Peale, Tuk and Mellenthin you should do this one!
much cooler on skis. the New version of SUWA would not approve but I'd like to bike down to Burro pass.

From Tomasaki
Perfect day for our first peaks in the La Sal's. Also hopped over "Point 11947." The weather was perfect and there was enough snow left up high for great photos.
Came from Geyser Pass, along Burro Ridge and dropped onto south ridge of Manns. Could skin all the way to Summit. Skied the north face with Seth and Jack B, into Beaver basin. Then hit Mineral and Green before exiting at Miners.
Short day with rain coming on after climbing the sub peak between Manns and Tomasaki. Met the huge Cyclops eye-patch cowboy in the Gates of the North then was spooked by a flock of crows on the ridge up. Eerie...but I'm intrigued for more. It seems to take many folks a day or three to climb the La Sals, its taken me years...
