7 Summit Day
Probably the most fun of the 7.

Marion Mountain Trail
Nice class 3 scramble to the summit. Five peak day in this order:
St. Ellens (unofficial)
Marion Mountain
Shirley Peak (unofficial)
Joyce Peak (unofficial)
Newton Drury Peak
Went up to the base of the summit block (within about 30' of the summit), but didn't know how to get all the way up, especially with snow and ice on the rocks. A group of 8 started from Marion Mountain TH on snow-covered trails and summited Marion Mountain (up to the base of the summit block), Shirley, Jean, Newton-Drury, Folly (only 2 hikers went all the way to the summit, not including me), and San Jacinto peaks.

In Winter
January 12, 2013, Penelope May-Smrz and I started from Idyllwild (Humber Park), hiked the Devil's Slide to the Saddle, up the San Jac trail to the Strawberry Cienega trail junction, then steeply uphill cross-country to the summit of Marion Mountain. It was cold in Idyllwild and on the mountain (16 degrees in town at 6 am) and the snow was very powdery and unconsolidated. On the upper mountain there was about knee deep snow. We didn't use snow shoes, it was our training hike. From the Humber Park side, the summit is the third one north (the distant one) as one gets to the summit ridge. 10.5 hours from Humber Park RT.

From Marion Mountain Trail
Had 2 more official 10K' peaks left in the San Jacinto area. Decided to do them on on a big three-peak loop, starting with Marion. Up the steep trail to the PCT, then straight up the ridge to the summit. Class 3 chimney looked more intimidating than it was. Fine views all around from summit. Downclimbing required a little thinking, but no major problems. Continued cross-country to Jean.
Diverted from a hike to SJ from Humber Park. Couldn't talk anyone but Erin into going with me and she balked at the summit block. We hit Drury on the way back to the trail and met my wife Caren, Jon, and Amy on the summit.
The day started out nice...by the time we got to the summit we were surrounded by thick clouds and snow, then it got dark. We could barely see 12" even with headlamps. Pretty fun.

Down-climbing the chimney was an adventure. With Cornell, Miller, San J, Folly, Drury, and Jean. Cross-country traverse back to the trail was a disaster. I led myself through steep slopes of manzanita and picked up a couple attractive lacerations. Route-finding fail.

7 Peak Loop
Loop from the tram including Cornell, Miller, SJ, Folly, Drury, Jean & Marion. The summit block was fun and had a little snow leftover in the final chimney up to the top.

Great Summit
Was going to hike the 6 peaks. That didn't happened cause my friend injured his dislocated shoulder again. He stayed below and I climbed the last 1000 or so feet solo. Lots of snow and great views. The summit block made things interesting...it was after I had climbed it when I realized that my camera was in my pack below.
Have done this whenever I go up Jean Peak and occasionally San Jacinto.

San Jacinto to Marion Traverse
Easy traverse made more challenging by unpredictable snow conditions (see Jean log). South slopes and saddles were mostly snow-free and an easy jaunt along with the descent to Wellman's Cienega since it was early in the growing season. The summit crack was a fun climb except for the ice/snow covering the lower footholds. Fun trip.

Snowshoe from Humber Park
Cold, icy summit. Rime falling from trees and rocks in the late sun. Great snowshoe conditions up the ridge from Saddle Junction.
