"After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

A pleasant hike with lots of wildlifeGot a reasonably early start today and was on the trail by 9 am. With it being a Tuesday, even in June, there was very little traffic on the trails and I saw some cool birds, deer up close, and dozens of tiny little frogs on the main trail that were right underfoot. It was a cool morning with overcast weather and I was down and across the river by noon. Cool, accessible little hike. I had done just the overlook with my son in the fall but the whole thing together is a solid morning.

Cardio Work OutWhat I enjoyed most was reading the historical facts along the route to find out that President Lincoln did not complete his trek up to review the troops.

River ViewI like this hike. Over 1,100 feet of gain (to the high point, not the overlook) - very rare in Maryland! I've done it four times, once as part of a tri-state loop including Loudoun Heights and the town of Harpers Ferry.

The humble beginnings... of my hiking and climbing adventures.
This wasn't the first ever hike I did, but I remember it well and consider it the start of my love for hiking and climbing in the mountains.
The guidebook described Harpers Ferry as an interesting historic place, so that's why I went there. The hike wasn't even planned, but when I got to the viewpoint and looked down to where the trail had started, I was hooked!

SimpleAn easy stroll up to the overlook and then around the Stone Fort Trail, where there are a few other overlooks. On the Stone Fort Trail, I only met a few people, since most were only up to seeing the overlook over Harpers Ferry.

Hiked trail up twicein the '70s and '80 and only once down. Views are great! "Gobbled" with the turkeys also further north from here as I hiked along one time.

First guided multi pitch experienceI am a beginner rock climber who has only done a couple of outdoor top rope sessions. So, when an experienced climber suggested multi pitching a 5.8 climb along the side of "The sign" I warned him that I might not be able to make it. But, with just a bit of prodding from him (Denny G.) and Kyle, I decided to try it. Well it was a very amazing experience. Of course I seconded (I think that's the proper term) the climb since I do not know how to trad climb yet. We did it in 6 pitches and I was also talked into rappelling down. I might have some images to add one in paticular that is right next to the sign, I think is really cool. I thought the views of the rivers and of the town of Harper's Ferry were really great! Also, all of the people down below stare at you and take pictures of you, making you feel like a super star! Or that you are crazy, which I'm sure some people think. But in reality, I know this is a pretty small cliff in comparison to many mountains out there.

MD HeightsTook my dog on the normal trail to the old fort first then to the overlook. The trail to the fort was a little steep.
