after xmas hike
Hiked up Mission Peak with my wife and dogs on a nice warm December day. Saw lots of people on the hike up Hidden Valley Trail, so we opted to traverse the peak and loop-hike down Horse Heaven & Peak Meadow Trails on the way down. There were significantly fewer people on this route which was nice, and only 1/2 mile longer than the ascent path.
This was at least my 3rd time up, and the 1st was the most memorable. In 1989, at the age of 11, I hiked with my Scout troop. We backpacked up and over the peak, then beyond into Sunol Wilderness. Since we hiked late into the evening and might have gotten lost once or twice, this historical trip was deemed the "Death March"; definitely a character builder. "Only 6 more miles" was the infamous phrase started on this trip and used, usually with some sarcasm and sighs, still to this day.
Anyhow, it's a fun, easy, and classic Bay Area hike with some great personal memories.

Crowded
The most crowded peak I've ever been up -- arrived before 6am and got the last spot in the parking lot. Saw literally hundreds of people -- just finding privacy to pee was a problem. Climbed it 25 years ago and had it to myself; but now it seems to be the thing to do for church groups etc.

Nice Bay Area day hike
Did it while training for Mt Whitney, carried my 3-year old most of the way.
First time in 1980 from Stanford Ave. The park was brand new and I had the whole peak to myself. Started using it for training in the early '90s. Usually went up once a day before work- twice on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Wish I was still in that kind of shape!
Ha! Cool to see Mission Peak up here. Hiked it more than 100 times by every route imaginable, used as a training route during the several years I worked down the street in Fremont. I love this peak, every day had a different vibe depending on season, time of day, wind & weather. Best car-to-car time was ~65 minutes. Walking thru cow herds always freaked me out.

Went back determined to get the three peaks (Mission Peak, Mt. Allison, and Monument Peak) and completed without trouble. Easy and enjoyable hike, fantastic views!

Done this morning
Took 61 minutes from trailhead to summit. Went over to Mt. Allison afterwords but couldn't find the right patch to Monument Peak so wound up missing out on the three-peak.

Nice hike
This time with Allison and Monument. Only my third time up Mission but have always enjoyed this hike, at least the uphill part. Could do without the walking down.

good training hikedespite the crowds on top, the Horse Heaven trail is less used and some nice really steep sections to work the legs.
