Well Done......for even finding the trail. When I was there briefly in 1996 I only had time for one shot at finding a way up. I had a hire car and turned inland towards the mountain only to find myself driving though a massive rubbish dump so leaving the car at that location didn't seem like a good idea so I drove further east and walked up to the high point of Tahiti-Iti instead.
Overall I found Tahiti an underwhelming experience, mainly due to garbage all over the beaches and in the bush. Hopefully they had it cleaned up by the time you visited.

Re: Well Done...I have been to Tahiti six times. Not much has changed since '96, except more concrete.
