US State Highpoint 18/50
A wretched road up to the top to try and ride a motorcycle on, but a nice view from the summit through a gap in the trees, and like most of the UP, very serene and peaceful. 18/50 highpoints down!

The Rough Road In (#12)
I was on my way back to Minnesota from a 4th of July road trip to a few state highpoints and Niagara Falls for this one. I came in from the East side, while it was raining pretty good. The roads were pretty rough for being well used logging roads, but no real surprises. As someone else said, the summit kind of looks like a campsite at an abandoned campground. Haha. Still a super fun trip.

Drove up. There was a high clearance RV at the top. At least a dozen folks visiting.

DON'T FOLLOW GOOGLE MAPS DIRECTIONS
If accessing by vehicle, if you plot the "most direct" driving path from L'Anse, it will take you via Arvon Rd, Grahm Rd, Ravine River Rd, Major Rd, and finally back to Ravine River Rd. This path should only be taken by rugged high clearance 4wd vehicles as it crosses two small streams and various extreme narrow back country tracks. (I suspect nearly impossible in wet or snow conditions) The proper way is from Sawmill Rd to Roland Lake Rd, West around Roland Lake, and then South as the road makes it's way up the mountain. I'd still highly recommend a 4wd vehicle as it is mostly just a dirt 2-track and is steep and rugged as you go higher. (coming from the East or South will also take you on very dodgy back country roads and is not recommended without a proper vehicle). Blue signage marks the way as you get closer. There is a large parking area about 100yds from the summit, and a viewing bench to the North of the summit with a view of Huron Bay and Point Abbaye.
The summit itself is improved with a picnic table, fire ring, mailbox and various signage, and it is possible to camp there, though there is no water or facilities.
This was state highpoint #15 for my daughter!! (only 13 for me).

Highpoint # 27
Second of four highpoints during a road trip from Minneapolis. First of the day before heading to Timms Hill in Wisconsin. I picked up printed directions from the visitor center in L'Anse and had no trouble at all following them. The roads leading to the Blue Blazed Trailhead parking lot are very well graded. I drove around a couple potholes, but frankly, those potholes were no worse than what I've experienced on regular roadways. Had a little trouble reversing the driving directions, but my cell phone picked up service along the way and navigated me back to the main road, albeit a different way. Returned to the visitor center in L'Anse for a high point achievement certificate, which is a fun souvenir!
2nd high point of day. There is nice little trail now so after driving all day hiking 3 miles RT was nice. Little view from bench. Perfect weather and nice leaf peeping. No moose at beaver pond sadly. Got lost a bit on those dirty roads driving out

Rugged and remote.
Spent most of the day driving north through Wisconsin and crossed into the UP in the afternoon. Ended up spending the night at the L'Anse public campground, which gets a definite thumbs up. The area is scenic and beautiful and I was lucky enough to be there on one of he longest days of the year. It didn't get fully dark until 10m pm.
The turnoff is twelve or thirteen miles out of town and you are quickly on rough logging roads. The wildlife was abundant in the late afternoon/early evening: I saw three turtles, grouse, and toads and heard a cuckoo at the "summit". The driving is the real adventure: you cross an improvised bridge and two bare stream crossings and can get lost pretty easily. Do not trust the GPS, it led ,me astray twice. I was lucky not to get caught in fading light on my way out. The view is actually quite nice as you can see Superior in the distance

Midwest high-pointing in fall
Second HP on this trip. #42 over all. We were in a 2-wheel drive 4runner rental, but about a 1/4 mile from the summit the road gets a bit steeper, and it was solid ice. Ended up having to go back down to the trail that is 1 3/4 mile one way. To be honest, I recommend doing this no matter the time of year. Although unplanned and throwing off our trip logistics, I enjoyed it. It is a well planned out trail (as best as it could be in that area) where you see a waterfall and cross the creek 3 or 4 times. It ended up be very enjoyable, even in several inches of wet snow. I would imagine in fall, with foliage, it would be a very pretty experience.

Surprisingly easy when you do not read the directions... drove to parking lot, expecting 1/2 mile hike, geared up, and within 50 feet I had my 2nd HP.
A few days later I learned on top of Eagle Mtn in Minnesota from a more experienced HP the error of my ways.
After doing Eagle Mt., MN in the early morning, I drove around Lake Superior to MI and found Mt. Arvon in the evening. There is a "new" hiking trail claiming to be 1.75 miles (but it's got to be shorter) that I used instead of driving to the summit.
Independence Day bag. Getting to this without aid from the blue signs on the road would be cruxy. Enjoyable outing and surroundings. Quite rural.

Getting there was a bit difficult, but following the signs helps. Getting out however was a nightmare, no signal to plot a new route so I had to drive until I hit a hardball and then follow traffic to a bar where I was able to get on wifi.

Beautiful Fall Colors
Perfect time of year to visit. Drove the truck for this one. Only 1 spot or so that would have been questionable with a car. Route is easy- just follow blue signs to the top. Met a really nice couple at the top.

HP #46!
Drove up with some fellow HPers in a 4WD Truck on the logging roads. Summit is very densely forested, so you can't see much, except for 1 small window of a view.
1.Spent the previous night at L'Anse campground; highly recommended
2. Drove to the trailhead (very slow going), the road would be near impossible in bad weather; used the summit post odometer readings ( a bit off but doable); the blue signs by the Hghpointers association were helpful.
3. Eat early because L'Anse closes up early.
4. The hardest part is getting to the trailhead, there is no climb just a 30 second walk...

What a beautiful area of the country! Wish I had had more time to explore the U.P.! I highly recommend doing the 3 mile RT hike from the parking lot up to this one. Wow, what a beautiful area!
