Smokey all the way up, so the views were...meh. But at least I wasn't choking on smoke.

Mountain Bike Approach
Left from camp at Diamond Lake with my friend Mike riding mountain bikes, which we stashed. Nice hike up, great rock arch view framing Mt. Thielson on the way up.

Early Fall
Clear and pleasant temps but windy. Shasta hidden in smoke but all other views all the way to Jefferson were great. Liked the picture frame hole in the cliff. Hiked from Hemlock Saddle.
The trail is easy to follow the whole way. Mosquitos were only bad near the bottom. Great views of Thielsen and many other distant mountains. Optional, you can drive a very rough road to cut a couple miles off your hike.

Its a Wonderful Mount
Hot, but beautiful, hike. Views were spectacular. I was surrounded by a cloud of huge flies at the summit, however.

Mount Bailey
Sunny, clear day, awesome views, great company. Snow all the way from Hemlock Cabin to the summit, a little icy in some areas closer to the summit. Couldn't ask for better weather in January.

1st ever summit
Great mountain to start on. Well marked and maintained.
Road 4795 is not plowed from the south end of Diamond Lake, so expect a long day with snow. The ridge was a little spicier than expected with some exposed traversing on firm snow to climber's left. 10.5 hours RT from Diamond Lake. I can't believe they get snowmobiles up that peak!

Trickier Than Expected, But Fun
Headed up Bailey via the Mount Bailey trail, looked like little to no snow at the top, so I left my snow gear behind. Once I crested the ridge, though (right before the rock window), the trail curved to the right and hugged the north face of the mountain for about a quarter mile. There was about a foot of snow hiding back there and because it was about 10am, it was still frozen completely solid, too hard to even kick-step without crampons. Had to sit and wait for it to thaw a bit, then kick-stepped my way up the slope and summited. Really beautiful view of the forest and Diamond Lake ringed by some really striking peaks.

Easy trail jaunt/ scramble
With Joe Brett from Syracuse, NY. A mild but entertaining adventure with big views once you get out of the timber. Only negative memory is that of the honey in my pack having made a terrible mess when I went to make a sandwich once at the summit.

Great day for a hike but views were extremely limited due to smoke from various wildfires.

Paired with Thielsen
Made for a nice day. Did it after Thielsen, making it out just before dark. Mosquitos were fierce, opening the car door for just a second let about 15 in that I had to kill before getting going.
