Route Climbed: Main Chute  Sucess!

Fun, short couloir climb. Nice to get crampons back on and feel the cold wind on your face. Ahhhhhh winter climbing. Skiing down the couloir wasn't that great, it was quite firm and icy, but skiing down the Ballroom and Wildcat in Alta Ski Area was nice. Good day out.

Bullion Divide  Sucess!

Hazy day; there must have been a fire somewhere. Also, April 12, 2008, I summitted twice (thanks to the Collins and Sugarloaf lifts) to ski Little Chute and Main Chute. I had a maladjusted binding and first turn into Main Chute, my ski popped off, and, with no leash or brakes, luckily didn't go down too far without me.

Cecret Lake  Sucess!

A quick hike from Albion Basin. Took a nap on the summit and got a nice sunburn on my legs. Great views of the AF Twins and Pfiefferhorn.

Collins Gulch  Sucess!

Easy hike with spectacular views. A good hike to take people on if they're not quite ready to do the harder peaks.

Climbed up and Skied down  Sucess!

  • April 7, 2007. It's not to far of a hike in the winter from the Sugar loaf chair at Alta. I did it simply to ski down the main chute, but I sure enjoyed the views.

  • April 12, 2008 -- did it again, this time I skied down the "shoulder".

  • April 18, 2008 -- once again, but this time I skied the Little Chute. It was icy, and a bit scary!

  • April 10, 2024 - hiked up from Snowbird and skied the west side back into Snowbird.

Various routes, often as part of other peaks  Sucess!

Multiple ascents: snow climb 5-1-07 (second time on summit), 7-14-07 (including Sugarloaf), 7-21-07 (same), 8-7-07 part of Alta ridge run from Superior south ridge around the horn to the tram, 6th time today 5-2-08 in snowshoes, Baldy & then Hidden Peak and ride down in comfort! :) #7 7-20-10 W/ ZeeJay (bagged Sugarloaf en route). From Albion Basin. Gorgeous wildflowers blooming right now. #8 5-17-11 W/ Dave from lower Alta parking lot. Just like winter: snow, ice, snowing, wind howling, visibility down to the nubs. Baldy chutes nearing the treacherous category with hard ice covered by 5"-6" new powder. This all makes the experience fun but challenging. #9 6-18-11 Solo. Again via a Baldy chute, one west of the last one. Surprisingly good snow for this date! Tons of skiers, too. Found a Lumix digital camera - anyone know whose it is? #10 2-25-12 From Snowbird; horrendous winds so forget the tram ride down. :( #11 3-13-12 Solo. Once again unforgettable winds, gusting as high as 65 mph. So strong I could not descend to Germania Pass at Alta - had to return to Snowbird over Baldy. Had used the Bird as a lauch point anyway. #12 5-22-12 Solo, from the Bird. Then over to Hidden Peak. At the saddle between the two marched along a thin ribbon of leftover snow most of the way between peaks. Nary a soul in the entire resort. # 13 7-4-13 To celebrate Independence Day - got Sugarloaf, too. #14 & #15 on 7-9-13 & 7-11-13 after Red Top, AF Twins and Hidden Peak. Back to tram for "scenic ride" down! :) #16 & #17 8-27-13 W/ Brent from the Bird to Hidden Pk, Baldy, to Sugarloaf and back to take tram down. #18 & #19 9-17-13 W/ Brent. Same as 8-27 but faster today!. #20 6-30-15 W/Brent after Haystack, AF Twin Peaks & Hidden Peak (via White Pine TH). #21, 22 7-11-15. 1st Hidden, then here and to Sugarloaf and back here. Wild flowers galore. Tolle Gesellschaft muss ich sagen. #23 9-8-15 After hiking to Hidden Peak. Big smoke from Deer Creek area. #24 9-19-15 W/Yz. Rehab hike #2. From tram & back to. #25 5-3-16 Solo after bagging Sugarloaf w/ Brent. 0+36 from Sugarloaf lift to summit, 0+18 back to Sugarloaf lift. Great snow. #26 & #27 8-12-16 w/ Brent & Lana. From Snowbird and with Sugarloaf sandwiched between. #28 8-27-16 W/ Yz. From Hidden Pk and back to Hidden Pk. Tram down. #29 9-23-17 W/ Lana from tram and back to tram. 5" snow, 27 degrees. About 30 minutes each way. #30 5-28-18 W/ Lana from Hidden Peak. Neat snow ridges along the way. # 31 & #32 7-20-18 W/ Brent & Lana. From Hidden en route to Sugarloaf and then return. Terrific wild flowers. #31 06-08-19 W/ Jeff & Nancy Munger via the High Rustler ridge from Wildcat base at Alta. Amazing amounts of snow still at the resort, even the base. #33 09-21-19 W/ Yadahzoe, after Hidden Peak north ridge. 4" of new snow, 2nd snow of September. #34 04-03-20 Solo. Via the Baldy Shoulder starting at the restroom door of the Buckhorn building. On snowshoes the entire time. 14 degrees at the start! 2+23 up. #35 04-08-20 W/ Lana via the Baldy Shoulder on snowshoes all the way like #34. 2+55 up on a fabulous bluebird day. #36 04-10-20 Solo via The Shoulder followed by Sugarloaf. Sketchy descent down the lower east face to reach Sugarloaf Pass. All in snowshoes. #37 04-17-20 Solo. 10" fresh snow, via the Shoulder at Alta. 2+18 up on a cold morning - 15 degrees F. #38 04-18-20 W/ Lana. Did Sugarloaf afterwards. Writhing clouds and mild temps. #38 07-06-2020 W/ Lana. Part of an AF Twins, 2 spines day from Snowbird level 2 parking. #39 07-10-2020 Solo. Exactly like summit #38. #40 07-15-20 W/ Lana. Exactly the same hike as on the 6th and the 10th. #41 08-17-20 W/ Lana. Like July 15th. #42 & #43 08-24-20 W/ Lana. From Hidden to Baldy to Sugarloaf, back to Baldy and back to Hidden. #44 & #45 08-26-20 W/ Lana. Just like the 24th. #46 & #47 09-11-20 W/ Lana & Brent. Patriot Day. Like August 26th. #48 & #49 09-18-20 W/ Lana; just like 09-11-20. #50 & #51 06-11-21 W/ Lana. The "Triple" like 9-11-20. #52 06-23-21 W/ Lana. Ridge run from Flagstaff Mountain to Hidden Pk. #53 07-16-21 W/ Lana. Meet Broc, then back to Hidden. #54 07-26-21 W/ Lana after Hidden. #55 & #56 08-20-21 W/ Lana The so-called "triple" including Hidden and Sugarloaf. #57 & #58 08-21-21 W/ Lana. "triple" with racers. #59 & #60 09-22-21 W/ Lana. The "triple." #61 05-23-22 W/Lana. From Alta Buckhorn building. Crampons entire trip. 3+14 up. #62 07-13-22 W/ Lana. After Hidden Pk 0+32 over. Meet Kessler grandkids and Norwegian lady. #63 07-25-22 Solo after Hidden. #64 07-26-22 W/ Lana, after Hidden. #65 08-01-22 W/Lana. After HP, AF Twins. #66 & #67 08-03-22 W/Lana. HP, Baldy, Sugarloaf and back to HP over Baldy.. #68 08-08-22 W/Lana. After Hidden. #69 & #70 08-09-22 W/Lana. HP, Baldy, SL, Baldy & HP. 5+53. #71 & #72 08-30-22 Solo. Part of "the triple." Took pictures of girlie group of six. #73 & #74 09-09-22 W/Lana. Part of "the Triple" again. At last, cooler temps. #75 09-21-22 W/Lana. HP first, then Baldy. 31 minutes over and the same back. Windy day, 49 degrees at HP. #76 & #77 09-30-22 W/Lana. Part of the Triple. #78 & #79 10-07-22 W/ Lana & Brent. Part of Triple. Odd cairns. #80 05-10-23 W/Lana. Full snow climb from the Collins lift base. Record snow year! #81 06-07-23 W/Lana. 3+40 up, crampons all the way. 1+18 down! #82 08-07-23 W/Lana. After Hidden w/ Brent. 0+33, 0+30 over and back. #83 08-25-23 Solo. After Hidden, then back to Hidden. #84 09-06-23 After HP. 0+33, 0+32 over & back. #85 10-04-23 W/Lana after HP. Lots of snow. #86 04-29-24 W/Lana. Same as #80 in 2023. Crampons all the way up, 15-20 mph northwest winds and totally crappy snow conditions on the north shoulder made the climb very tough. Then on to Sugarloaf. This was peak #23 in my 80in80 project. #87 08-26-24 W/Lana. After Hidden via Gad Valley. Tram down. #88 09-06-24 W/Lana. After HP and then back to HP. 2+26 up today. #89 09-11-24. W/Lana. Like last time. 2+17 up. #90 09-16-24 W/Lana. Like last hike. 20-30 mph SW winds made for a brutal yo-yo. 43°. #91 09-20-24 W/Lana. Like last time but bluebird morning. #92 09-25-24 W/Lana. Like last time, fantastic colors showing. #93 10-11-24 W/Lana. Like last time w/ Hidden Peak 2x.

    Baldy not Sugarloaf  Sucess!

A month ago I hiked up Sugarloaf thinking it was Baldy. What do you expect? I'm from Georgia. Nice hike. I had lunch on top for 1 1/2 hours chilling out sitting on the rock cairn then back to the Catherine Pass TH to change clothes and off to the airport for home.

I travesed over after summiting Sugarloaf from Cecret lake and made the top fairly quickly , I liked the climb and it is great to do with others that may not share as much tolerance for longer harder climbs.

Route climbed: east ridge from top of Sugarloaf ski lift  Sucess!

Jon Tanner and I climbed this with our alpine ski gear and then skied down to the bottom of the northwest shoulder of Mount Baldy where we got escorted the rest of the way down the mountain to the ski patrol office. Lotta hassle, but it was worth it! We were let go with a warning - it was just never made real clear what rule we might have broken.

Route Climbed: Gad Valley/Hidden Peak Date Climbed: Sept. 3, 2005  Sucess!

The aim was to summit American Fork Twin Peaks from Gad Valley, but I got mixed up on the Gad Valley roads, and ended up on Hidden. Turned out to be a good thing, cuz just as we reached Hidden, the rain came down. So, decided to go up the west ridge of Baldy, then down to Alta. Great day! First time in the area.
