If you go there from Belnap, come back the same way!

The canyon to the east is a little too "scenic."

I couldn't bear the thought of going back over Belknap. I read your TR BTW. I'm very glad we didn't have to walk from Big John Flat because it was a long day as it was. We descended Baldy the same way we went up and then took the first spur ridge (on the way back to Belknap) down to just north of Blue Lake and then with some minor difficulty found the Skyline Trail which we took back to Mud Lake.

Yes, I didn't realize that route would "go" till I was below it... a bit of steep hard snow then, though, and that colored my decisions.
