Mount Brown
Good day with a good friend. Took the standard route; the last 600 ft were the best.

Different Route
This time we went up from Avalanche Lake. After a brief bushwack it was essentially a steep snow climb. Would be awful without snow. Made for a fairly quick and fun ascent to the summit. Descended the standard route to the lookout and down the trail.

Detour to the south
Followed the standard route past the lookout to the jagged summit ridge. I found the wind/exposure combination on the ridge to be a little too dicey for my liking.
Opted to backtrack slightly and descended down a loose scree slope to the south to avoid the summit ridge. This detour was technically class II, but the scree was very hard packed and required careful footing to avoid a slip or tumble. Once I carefully descended approximately 300 feet into the south basin, I traversed a bit eastward until locating the first obvious break in the cliffs. From there, I followed a class III route upwards. Regained the summit ridge just to the west of the actual summit. Spectacular views on a clear day! Retraced my route on the descent.
We were going to bike up going to the sun road as it was closed to vehicles, but after we'd biked 4 miles up the road, it was closed even to bikes for construction, so we turned around, went to a visitor center to check out some climbing books, saw this hike, and ended up doing it. A bit killer on the knees going down, but those goats sure love to lick up your pee

Mount Brown
Took a group of eight up on a beautiful sunny day. Fun ridge. Trip down took some extra time as we were distracted by a ton of ripe huckleberries lining the trail. Took a refreshing dip in McDonald lake afterwards.

so close
i came extremely close to the summit--a wonderful climb on one of my favorite mountains in glacier park, despite falling short. upon discussing my route with a veteran gnp climber i discovered exactly where i went wrong (aside from wearing lousy boots that gave me blood blisters!). it was a beautiful day during a wonderful summer, and i had the mountain entirely to myself. can't wait to give it another shot!

Foggy AscentThis was a very foggy and chilly October day. There were times of no visibility but an occasional break in the fog gave us some amazing views.
Also hiked to the lookout 9/25/11 with Steve and Robin.

Don't forget the winter ice climbs in the ampitheater on the north side of Brown, just above Lower Snyder Lake.
