Came here on a blustery rainy afternoon, but had a flat on the road up, so I changed the tire and descended to a tire shop to get a new one anyway, which put me off a couple hours. Came back late in the afternoon as the rainclouds came on. They said I could drive partway up, but the road was closed for the last mile or so, so I hiked a trail to the top. Turned out to be a great way to go. I had the summit entirely to myself (how many can say that for Diablo?), and it was kindof cool to be hiking the trails in cold misty dusk conditions. By the time I was back to my truck and descended off the mountain, it was dark.

Mitchell Canyon
This has the makings of a good Winter training ground. Twin Peaks, Eagle Peak, North Peak and the summit of Mt Diablo. Beautiful calm, cloud free day. Only saw a few other hikers the entire time out. With a BART station just a few minutes from here I was expecting to see oodles of people. This hike is worth doing.

Great Bay Area Peak
I have hiked, ran, biked this mountain many times. The view from the summit is incredible, considering the relatively low elevation. I always find more people on the summit than on the trails. Go on a weekday.

Nice, somewhat steep climb to Eagle Peak then back down, then back up to reach Diablo. Made it to the summit just before the fog did. Beautiful day! Met Will & descended with him. Good times in Cali.
Good place to train. Been to the summit mucho mucho times and crawled all over this mountain. Each side has a different personality. Fun mountain.

Mitchell Canyon Fireroad
This was a nice, chilly hike that took 4:45 from car to car. After getting to the top, I slowly jogged down with an adventure racer that I had met at the top. He is planning on attempting a speed record for a one-way traversal of the John Muir Trail this summer.

Juniper Trail
Great day for a climb. Got a very un-alpine start at 12:30pm. Did the mile and half climb in 30 minutes and found a parking lot on top with the summit inside a building. Great views on all sides but a little hazy and foggy.

Juniper Trail, Rock City with great views
Hiked the Juniper Trail from Diablo Vally Overlook to the summit and back, hiked over to Devil's Elbow, and then drove to Rock City later in the day. The view from the summit looking west was excellent. Could see Sutro Tower, Downtown SF, the Golden Gate, and Tamalpais. View east was limited due to valley fog.

Route: 4 Summits from Mitchell Cyn Date: 11.05.06
Spectacular views after this week's Bay Area rains - Four Summits is a wonderful hike, no crowds on trail.. but pretty crowded at the summit with the "drive-up" folks on the top of Diablo.
Went with climbing partners S. Thompson and GMC Envoy. Started from Walnut Creek a little bit after 11:00AM. Reached the summit at about 12:30. Was a little disapointed when the ranger told me there was no summit register in which I could chronicle my efforts.

Regency trailhead
I like this trailhead more than Mitchell Canyon, because you start gaining elevation a lot sooner, and the scenery is more interesting. Did the Falls Loop on the way up.
Route Climbed: From Mitchell Canyon. The round trip is a strenuous 23.4 mile hike (11.7 mile one way). Felt quite a bit, especially in the sun, when you are the ONLY ONE on the trail.

This is not a very good training hike as it is mostly flat and hot for the first few miles; it took us 2:45 to get to the top though so it wasn't a huge time commitment.
