Mount Elbert
Left the south trailhead at 7:00 a.m. Very nice weather at the lower level of the mountain. At 13,000 feet it was very cold, rainy and windy. Kept going. Reached the summit at 11:00 a.m. Beautiful, sunny weather at the top.

South Mt. Elbert Trail
Started hiking at 5:45 AM with my son Ryan. Hiked through aspen forest, then through evergreens, and then above treeline. There was some fresh snow above treeline and over 6 inches near the summit. Very pretty. Nearby mountains were white with snow. Reached the summit at 10:45 AM (Ryan at 9:50). Very cold and windy at the top. Met 4 others at the summit at about the same time (3 from the North Mt. Elbert Trail). Met several hikers on the way down, but it really wasn't that crowded. It was my first time in Colorado and I really enjoyed the scenery in the state. Leadville, Twin Lakes, and Granite are cool towns. Had filet mignon at Quincy's in Leadville. Excellent. HP #20.

Elbert 2-day
With daughter Vanessa, we camped in a meadow at 10000. This was number 14 of my 49 state high points. It was Vanessa's first overnight on a mountain higher than 10,000 feet. She eventually did 39 state highpoints.

Summit with my wife
This was my wife's second mountain ever, after topping out on Democrat a couple days earlier. We drove up the 2 miles to the real trailhead to avoid the extra hike.

Pretty easy hike. Contrary to many others, we saw maybe only 20 people the whole day.
Crowded!! Saw 50 people on the summit, 0 on Black Cloud. Lame summit view

I reached the summit with hiking pals, Phil Miller and Dan Spare in about three and a half hours. Beautiful weather encouraged the long walk to the top with at least 50 people at the summit. My 7th fourteener.
Great roadtrip out to Leadville with a hike up the northeast ridge.

Great first 14'er
We had a phenominal day... zero clouds. Took the Southeast trail from the lower trailhead/parking lot. 7 hours total (including some time to hang at the summit). Lots of fun, great views.
