Great weather, great hike.
First time back in the 14er groove since July. Great friends and great times in the mountains though. The weather was beautiful. Blue bird skies and nice and warm. Fall is definately the best time of year to get up Elbert!

Mixed feelings
Elbert was the first 14er I did solo or without my faithful companion, Odin, my Golden Retriever who joined me for 17 14er summits. It felt strange hiking without him.
Stopped short at 13650 ft. 1/2 mile below summit due to hiking solo and snow on trail at 11:30 AM. Felt fine, but better safe than sorry. Will have to come back and do it again next year.

Mount Elbert. Colorado's highest point!
Started at 5:00 am from the TH. Easy hike all the way up to the snow covered summit. Got to the top just on time. It started thundering 15 minutes after I reached back timberline.
Mount Elbert (4,399 m/14,433 ft).
My 1st HP.!

#3
I climbed this with my Boy Scout Troop from Lakewood. Didn't feel good all day and ended up throwing up on the way down. It was like a highway all day going up and down, but a very nice route. Extremely easy.

First 14er
This was my first 14er. Hiked it with my brother using the South Mt Elbert trail. It was a fun hike, but had a lot of vertical.
I highly recommend this hike. The weather, as I anticipated, was unpredictable. I wanted to start pre-dawn, to possibly see the sunrise from the summit, but lightning storms lit up the night sky like a laser show (so I waited until dawn to begin). In between periods of beautiful blue sky & sun, I encountered several rain drizzles & three hailstorms before reaching the summit... which then had a new weather system to greet me with approximate 20-30 MPH winds. Great scenery all along the North Elbert Trail, especially along the Northeast Ridge.
Had a spectacular hike up via the North trail while acclimating for the Leadville - Mosquito Marathon. We were greeted by three Army Blackhawk helicopters near the summit. Quite the strange spectacle!

South route
Came up from the south. Had no one on the trail the whole way up or down... great hike! Only saw others when I got to summit, then it was a party.

Climbed via the North Elbert Trail. Met a horse up there (and rider) who came up via the South. Quite unexpected.

Are you guys sure?!?
Via the North Route. Hit the trail early to avoid the t-storms late morning. Fabulous view, but man it feels like there's about 20 mountains higher when you look around.

Left the North Trailhead at 8am, met up with the mob at the top at about 11. Later start than I would have liked, but the weather was fantastic so it didn't matter too much.

Northeast Ridge
After a soaking rain dropped several inches overnight at the Elbert Creek Campground, the day cleared out enough that we had no problem making the summit in about 2 1/2 hours. Great views of Mt. Massive, which we climbed the next day. Lots of people on top, but all great folks.
My 2nd 14er and 38th state highpoint!
