South Elbert TH
The colors of fall were becoming quite brilliant already this day. We got hit by a bit of graupel. Pretty typical for this time of year: Graupel and cold near the summit, heat at timberline. Partner: Extraordinarily grumpy (though loveable) husband.

Getting back in shape
I hadn't exercised at all for the past 3 months and had gained 15 lbs while working in Qatar. This was my first outing since then, and it worked out very nicely with a 2:40 hrs summit time! Nice views from the summit.

Afternoon hike
Drove up from Albuquerque in the morning, met some friends who had driven in from Utah, started hiking at about 2:45 pm and made it to the summit to see the sunset. It was my first 14er, but hopefully not the last.

Mt. Elbert via South Mt. Elbert Trail
Climbed with Christoph and Guy. Started at 9 am a little above South Mt. Elbert trailhead, summited 12.45 pm. Thunder storm rolling in immediately after reaching the summit, so we had to run down....easy walk-up, but I felt the altitude more than usual, maybe due to very bad sunburn I got the day before.

third state highpoint with my son
Hiked this with my 10yo son on Saturday, 4th of July. Our 3rd state highpoint in a 6-day span (also AZ & NM). We had planned to hike this on Friday the 3rd, but it was raining in the morning so we postponed the hike. There was quite a parade of people going up the trail on the 4th of July.

Mt Elbert
Drove from Kansas all night Thur to reach the trailhead on Friday morning. Was hoping to get adjusted to the altitude that Fri & do the actual summitting on Sat, July 4th. But got greedy & found other flatlanders trying to make their way up. Got motivated & summitted on the same day. Was a beautiful day & a beautiful hike.

Windy
2nd time of the week - had to go back to get clear views up top. Beautiful clear day but wind in early morning was absolutely brutal, but great day nonetheless.

Elbert
Climbed South face with friend Larry, and south east ridge with Nancy.
A gentle giant, a very tall hill. It seems we only climbed it for height. No real exposure or scrambling, but this is one that you have to do, Colorado's highpoint!
Summited at around 11 a.m. or 11:40 a.m.
Were on the trail head 7:30 a.m.
It snowed some on the top, but no thunder, many marmots.
