Training hike  Sucess!

Training for bigger objectives later in summer, I don’t have many free weekends so despite rainy forecast headed out. Just skipped scrambling mountains for this “easy” 48er. 9.6 miles decent amount of folks out there. No view due to mist and rain. Fitness seems on track even ran the last 2 mikes or so to beat the rain.

Thunderstorm and Mosquitoes  Sucess!

Did this as a last training hike before my first Rainier climb. Hike started from Lafayette Place Parking lot to the summit of Mount Lafayette, then to the summit of Mount Garfield and back. Got caught in a severe thunderstorm just below the summit of Garfield so Mike and I pitched the tent and took a two hour nap. We woke to sunlight then proceeded to the Garfield summit then made it to within 8 miles of the parking lot where we set the tent up in the dark in the middle of the trail. The next morning we hiked the remaining 8 miles to the parking lot through an infestation of mosquitoes.

From the southeast  Sucess!

Nine hours and forty minutes to the summit starting from Lincoln Woods, after climbing Owl's Head first. It ended up being a twelve hour day once I ended at the Galehead Hut because the cold I had was kicking my ass at the end of a nineteen mile day.

Very Enjoyable  Sucess!

Trail was very nice, especially closer to the summit. Great view from the top.

Nice component of the Pemi Loop  Sucess!

I bagged this peak as part of a 1.5 day Pemi Loop trip where I bagged 10 4K summits in all (plus a few that didn't count). The weather was incredible, but the ridge line was bone dry and had I been smart I would have refilled my water at Liberty Spring because I was desperate by the time I was coming off Garfield. at the end of a good day, Garfield kicked my butt like the Presi's do because of bolder-laden trail that provides to relief! I was partly dehydrated at this point and desperate to bag the peak and get to my campsite but the views were wonderful here ... if only one of the other people on the summit weren't smoking a stogie and ruining our nature experience. My favorites of them all were West Bond and Bond Cliff where solitude abounded and the stark beauty of the ledges around the summits made for great places to quietly sit and appreciate what God has made for us to experience if we just step out of our comfort zone a bit.

Rain a-Coming  Sucess!

The end of our 2nd day on the AT. We hit this peak right before staying the night at the Garfield campsite. The rain had just started on our way from Mt. Lafayette and we got limited views from the top. This was peak #5 on our 5-day trip.

Climbed on a crisp, crystal clear day. Fabulous views from the summit and someone had managed to drag a lute to the top!

Garfield Trail  Sucess!

Most of the trail was very flat and boring. It only became steep and fun near the summit.

Pemi-LoopWith all add ons  Sucess!

This is where the loop started getting rugged. We were now hiking at night and were in a full blown snowstorm by summit time. We saw the peak all day as we approached, but couldnt get there in time for a summit sunset and the storm just raised our adrenaline levels. Will have to make a return trip on a better day

Flume to Garfield traverse  Sucess!

Awesome finish to a fine traverse from Flume over to Garfield. I really enjoyed the beautiful rock right at the summit of Garfield. It made me boulder for well over an hour enjoying the beautiful sunny weather and great traverse I had just accomplished.
I ran into a couple guys who had just finished a Peace Corps assignment on the summit. They were going across the country by motorcycle. I hung out with them that night before my aunt came to pick me up.

Pemi loop backpack  Sucess!

Did a Pemi Loop over 2.5 days with a couple of friends. Going counter clockwise, camped at Guyot and Garfield tent sites. Saw an awesome lightning over a town to the north storm from Garfield; got hailed on in a lightning storm on the way out on the last day. Had a bottle of Bowmore with us.

The waterfall is fun, but a bit demoralizing at the end of a long day!

there at 9 am  Sucess!

I hiked up to the Garfield Ridge tentsite from the Garfield Ridge Trail (I stayed at the Guyot tentsite the night before). I literally had to hoist my dog up a waterfall prior to reaching the spring. This was fun, believe it or not. I stayed the night at Garfield Ridge tentsite and woke up early the next morning to summit Garfield. No one else was there, and the views of Lincoln and Lafayette were amazing. A burly mountain, but worth it.

Awesome  Sucess!

Example of an easy trail providing thrilling hiking. Flooded river crossings, improptu waterfalls careening down the mountainside all make for a great hike...when you get out.

Wettest Day Ever  Sucess!

With Flanders via the Garfield Trail. Decided to do this one on a rainy day since we've already done everything else in this range and figured we could sacrifice the views. Not raining when we started but muggy. About half an hour in, it started raining. It never ended and only got heavier. By the time we got near the summit, we were soaked and the trails were starting to look like streams. The summit was viewless and really windy. Had to do a wet hug of the rock to get up to the old foundation at the summit. Spent all of about 5 seconds there before heading back down. On the way down, the trails that had become streams were all waterfalls. We walked back down in about 6-8 inches of water, soaked from our toenails to the tops of our heads. The "brook" crossing near the bottom was now 4 upper thigh high whitewater crossings. If it had been any higher, I don't think we could have held against the force of the water. We had to search up and down the banks for "safe" places to cross. Was quite the adventure.

When we got back to the car, we headed back to our campsite on the Pemigewasset River. We broke down camp with about 20 minutes to spare before it was overrun and flooded by the river. Otherwise our tents would have been lost along with my suitcase and gear I had not taken. After doing this and seeing the forecast, we decided to get out of Dodge and drove back to Massachusetts to wait out the tropical storm that had come up from Florida before doing some more peaks down there.
