Hike with the Scouts  Sucess!

An easy scramble up from the Mono Lake trailhead with some guys from the scout troop. Imposing and magnificent view of Mt. Dana from the summit. False summit game on this mountain is ridiculous. SPS register on top.

Sierra Challenge  Sucess!

Tagged it on my way to Kuna Crest on an otherwise-short day. Kind of a slog, but with a cool view of the smoke in the valley to the east. Trip report.

With 30+ mph sustained winds, Janet and I actually enjoyed our ascent and scrambly descent of Gibbs. Fun and quick.

A huge mountain of talus  Sucess!

The intent was to traverse from Gibbs to Dana. It looked like a beautiful, clear sky day. From the lake at Mono Pass I went right up the mountain to the summit. Nothing but talus to hike on. I descended into the saddle between the two mountains (I'd say a class 3 with some exposure descent) where I noticed a thunderstorm heading right my way. Lucky me I was in the saddle and not half way up Dana. I run down in between the two mountains toward the Yosemite Valley knowing that I would eventually come across the Mono Pass trail. Thundering and rain was hitting the mountains really bad. I only stopped running when I found the trail, about half mile to the Mono Pass trailhead.

South Ridge  Sucess!

Mono Pass TH. Traveled the dog and pony trail to Mono Pass. Loved knowing that this general route was a major Native American trade route and imagining the Golden Crown Mine at work in the 1880's. Left the mine field and beautiful view of Summit Lake at the sign by turning north and heading up the ridge line. Welcomed the flattish section half way up to take in the views of the canyon and valley to the east as I traveled along. He's one big pile of talus and I continually thought of the trials of the poor horse that took Olmstead along with Brewer to the top. If I were king, I'd name the mountain after the horse, not a professor of science back at Harvard. And all the while the Civil War was raging on. I began the return to base via the West Ridge, then leaving it shortly after the false summit to run straight down to the banks of Parker Pass Creek then out the dog and pony trail to the TH

via Mono Pass Parking Lot  Sucess!

Easy hike from the Mono Trail Parking Lot. Navigation was a breeze, even through the wooded part after leaving the Mono Trail - just keep heading up the tallest line ahead of you. The talus begins at 11000ft. Started at 5am in time to see a gorgeous sunrise come over the Dana-Gibbs saddle. Beautiful morning. 3.5hr car-to-car. Trip report/GPX Track

Via West Slope

Tried this with a girl friend. Had fun navigating cross country, but once we really stopped having fun on this nasty scree pile (and considering we were both still recovering from knee surgery), we turned around ~700ft from top.

West Slope  Sucess!

This mountain is a huge pile of broken rock, with wonderful views from the top. The biggest challenge was reaching the false summit, the true peak was then a simple 15-minutes walk from there. Took me three and a half hours from the Mono Pass trailhead to the summit. Container box is there, but the summit register is stolen. Shame! No USGS bench mark either.

December climb  Sucess!

With Tioga pass open the latest ever, I took the opportunity to climb this with sister-in-law Gil and nephew Rand. I was fooled by the false summits, especially the last -- driving back I realized you can see the entire ridge from the road; take a good look and you won't be tricked on the way up. The true summit is 0.4 miles east and 300' higher than high peaky thing I was pushing for on the way up.
