Mount Goddard Summit Panorama

Northwest is on the far left and south-southwest is on the right. September 2011 I had long noticed that virtually every peak I climbed in the Sierra tends to have a decent view of Mount Goddard. It wasn’t until I reached the summit of Mount Goddard itself that it occurred to me what this might indicate about the vista from there. Here a total of 84 peaks have been definitively identified, and of course there are 100s of others visible on the horizons too. Peaks range from Mount Lyell (53 miles) to White Mountain Peak (44 miles) to Mount Whitney (43 miles) to Mount Kaweah (42 miles). All of the 15 so-called Emblem Peaks of the SPS List are visible except Matterhorn Peak (the northernmost) and Olancha Peak (the southernmost). In addition to visible confirmations, peak identification was aided by drawing arrays on topographic maps and comparing the angles between the resulting arrays with horizontal spacing observed in the photograph. Not an easy process but just about the only way to validate peaks 30+ miles away!
