Route Climbed: Mt. Herman Road trailhead
Lovely, sunny day with friends and husband. Glad we got to the trailhead early, though. By the time we hiked out (about 11:00 AM) other vehicles were waiting for our parking spot!

Failed summit.
Very windy day with waist-deep snow on parts of the trail. And, the trail was very hard to find. My wife and I turned back at 8620'; we were spent from all of the postholing. See my trip report for more information.

Nice Hike
Great short hike with my son on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The aspens were at peak color and had great views of Pikes with snow above treeline.

Mt. Herman Road TH
After reading the posts here, I was concerned I would lose the trail. Anyhow, it wasn't that bad. Went up in before sunrise with a headlamp. Ran a good part of the way but also a lot of scree. Would make a great Cub Scout or kids day hike. Might be too much for the Tiger Cubs but certainly very doable for Webelos and older elementary school age kids. Beautiful sunrise from the summit.
Took my 10-year old to Mt Herman, 15 miles from the house as the crow flies. Only one other car parked on Trail 716, and from the dewey windows, it was someone that had spent the night on the mountain. Met them coming down, then had the summit to ourselves after losing the trail again (see my summit log for April 1st). We did some easy class 3 scrambling at the top which wasn't a big deal. Nice day but a bit hazy in the sky overlooking Monument. Then it was an easy hike down and met one other couple. Could tell there was quite a bit of erosion since my April summit. Oh well, it was a great day to take the son on a nice hike.

Great Views!
Had the peak pretty much to myself today and just sat and enjoyed a snack and took a ton of pictures. Lost the trail on the way up (did some class 2-3 scrambling and followed the GPS)but I guess I missed the cairns which were pretty obvious on the way down. Ran down to the trailhead in about 8 minutes. All in all, a great little hike with a little bit of everything (rivers, forests, scree, scrambling, prairies, awesome views from the summit) that I recommend to all.

Nice hike on a beautiful day. We assumed the east approach to the summit would be easy because the trail is in great condition at Red Rocks trailhead. As often happens in the mountains. appearances are deceiving and the trail soon petered out (or maybe we just got lost). Anyway we bushwhacked up the northern ridge (it was easy to follow other tracks to the summit) and made the top in about 1.5 hours. On the ridgeline as we walked south to make the actual summit we found a most amazing site. We ran into a rock formation that was covered with thousands of ladybugs. It was amazing and beautiful at the same time. We have no idea what they were doing but they literally covered the rocks. It was really cool. We decided to go off the west side of Mt. Herman down trail 716 and walk out on the Mt. Herman road. The hike took a lot longer than we planned but was beautiful and we concluded under a brilliant moonrise. Great hike!

Family HikeHiked this several times as a little kid. Look for tons of ladybugs in the fall. Cool stuff.
