Dayhike from Union Wash  Sucess!

Cool weather and light snow squall above 9,000'. Saw a big cat at the bottom of the switchbacks in Union Wash.

Yep  Sucess!

8hr50m for both Inyo and Keynot. I was able to drive up to the washout at 5100 feet, but it was a little sketchy for the subaru.

2nd Ascent  Sucess!

Camped at the same spot in Union Wash, approximately 5100' and the road past there is washed out. First Inyo, then Keynot. Keynot still held a lot of snow just below the summit. It took some rock scrambling to get around some of it. I lost my Garmin 64s in the vicinity of the summit (brush). If anyone finds it, it's mine!

After Keynot in a White-Out  Sucess!

Poor visibility, fresh snow, boring ascent in snow storm. Didn't spend more than 90 seconds looking for register, didn't find it. No views. oh well

Inyo-Keynot Dayhike  Sucess!

After climbing Waucoba earlier in the day (why isn't there a Waucoba page here???), I drove up to 5200' on the 4x4 road into Union Wash and camped. Up at 4:30 a.m., and on the "trail" by six. I made Inyo first, and then Keynot. Instead of bypassing the "obstacles" on the ridge to Keynot, I went over them. By the time I got back to my car my feet where really complaining from the more than 6000' of descending (and three days and four peaks of climbing). What a great trip.

Union Wash  Sucess!

8.5 hour dayhike of Inyo and Keynot with Pat. The views to the snow-covered Sierras were incredible and I could have stared at them all day. We found very dry conditions in the Inyos with only a few very small patches of snow. The scree ski back down to Union Wash was epic!

From Union Wash  Sucess!

It's annoyingly far from the top of Union Wash, but there's a decent trail, and the view of the Sierra is absolutely amazing. Trip report.

Inyo from Union Wash  Sucess!

Mojavebobcat (Jordan) and I completed this route, getting an alpine start (ha!) at about 11:30am from the 4wd TH parking at ~5,400'. We both found this route to be absolutely brutal. The scree slog up to the saddle between Inyo and Keynot alternates between tough and miserable, though it makes for a rather rapid descent! We'd hoped to make it over to Keynot, but with a near noontime start, this was not in the cards. No real big deal anyway, as it was pretty hazy on top of Inyo and we'd prefer to see the view from Keynot on a clearer day than we had. Next time, we'll go up the French Spring trail to Forgotten Pass for Keynot; neither of us cares to make the steep, hot, and dry ascent up Union Wash again, pretty as it was. A true DPS classic with quite an impressive summit perch.

Snow  Sucess!

Slippery boulders near summit. The west side has a gentler shelf. We got up to ~10850' on Keynot before steep loose snow turned us around. Thanks to KW for organizing the trip.

Over from Keynot  Sucess!

Like Keynot better- was a bit tired pushing through the last stretch to the summit after Maturango the day before. Comfortable all day until I reached Union Wash at the end- too hot at the bottom.

From Union Wash  Sucess!

Started at 6am from the 2WD parking on a day when a spring storm hit the Sierra. Got pounded by a couple of heavy snow showers and strong wind above 9000ft but the day remained mostly sunny. Lots of unconsolidated snow made for slow going along the ridge. Passed on Keynot because of the sketchy conditions. The scree descent is spectacular. A very enjoyable outing. 8.5h car to car.

Route Climbed: South Ridge via Union Wash Date Climbed: January 21, 2006  Sucess!

A tedious hike due to all the different terrain awagher and I had to cover: the wash pebbles, all the scree, and to top it off the knee-deep snow in the last 400 vertical feet to Inyo. We started at 6:15am from my 2WD parked car at 4,400 feet. We're making pretty good time until we hit the sugary knee-deep snow in the flat sections above the Inyo/Keynot saddle. Took over an hour to plow through 400 vertical feet of unconsolidated, sugary snow. I got to Inyo's summit at 1:14pm. Great views of the Sierra, though. Left the summit a few minutes before 2:00pm and were back at the car by 5:20pm (approx 11 hrs roundtrip). I second what awagher said: don't plan to hike this peak again!

Hiked up with Snow Nymph and others. I also did Keynot which made for a very long day. Came down the endless scree above Union Wash in the dark by GPS. Got off track at one point and got stuck above a cliff above the wash near the waterfall. Because I had circled back a couple of times I couldn't figure out which track to follow on my GPS. Eventually I got back on the right one and got out. Despite the heavy snow this year, we encountered very little all the way to the summit.

did this as an overniter w/ DPS (Dennis Richards, Ron Hudson and company.) Left the cars about 8am and were able to bag Inyo the same day (albeit a very long, exhausting day.)

Got the full spectrum of weather from sunshine to drizzle, rain, snow between Bedsprings and Inyo. Absolutely worthwhile.
