Kaweah Slog
4 hrs up, 2 hrs down.
Epic views of the northern basin and the eastern sierras from the top.
Couldn't see kaweah gap.
Honestly some of the other kaweahs look taller, even though this one is supposed to be the tallest.

HST Side Trip
Side trip from the High Sierra Trail. A good fun day!
You can read my trip report for a bit more info:

The South Slopes are a slog from Big Arroyo. I don't understand why this peak is an SPS Emblem Peak - Black Kaweah would be much more deserving of being called emblematic. The views from Mount Kaweah are not as unobstructed as those from Black Kaweah. Trip report

From HST via SW Slopes
Took a detour while on the High Sierra Trail to check off this summit with magnificent views - some of the best in the entire Sierra. Boulder hop felt endless both up & down, but in the end it was totally worth it. One of the highlights of an already amazing trip.
My first trip into the Mineral King area, climbing Sawtooth Peak, Needham Mountain, Eagle Scout Peak, Mount Kaweah, and Second Kaweah over a four day backpacking trip from the Sawtooth Trailhead.

Big Arroyo
Didn't see a soul on this solo outing. Over Glacier and Hands and Knees Pass on day one to reach Big Arroyo. Spent the second day on Kaweah, day three on Triple Divide, and up Lippincott and out on day four.

An easy, but long, walk up sand and scree to the top. Not the most amazing route up but an awesome view from the top!

Route: Southwest Slopes
Party- 7
Length of trip - 28 days
Interesting climb, nothing like the Northwest Sierras. Or the Northwest for that matter. Still, great views. The descent was fun, all off what we climbed up was scurry run-able until the band of woods, went down that, hit a boulder field, and found our base camp in a matter 2 hours after the summit. Ascent probably took 4. It solidified that Muir was a bad ass for doing 6 MPH over that type of terrain.
My favorite person in the logs was the guy who decided to do LSD on the summit. And some dude from 1933 on a piece of wood we found. Some OG's that for sure.
Hit an amazing sunset on the way down. Scarlet Vibrancy.

From Big Arroyo
Tom Becht and I had a marvelous day for our climb up the SW slopes from Big Arroyo. We then contoured around to the base of 2d Kaweah. Tom went for it and was successful, but I decided to pursue camp chores at the Big Arroyo and save myself for big, Black Kaweah the next day.
Tom and I noted that we were the first party to summit Big Kaweah this year (assuming that everyone who gets to the top signs the register).

Great hike from the Big Arroyo with Augie on a perfect day. Went on to do Second Kaweah but scrubbed plans for Red Kaweah. On to Black tomorrow!

On a chilly and very windy day, there were beautiful views to the east, with clouds creeping in from the west. Just me and my brother Fritz - we have been bagging Sierra peaks together for 35 years. See pictures at http://community.webshots.com/user/langenbacher
