Perfect weather on OAP
Great campsite on the far side of Cottonwood Lake #4, just before Old Army Pass. Perfect weather; practically no wind/clouds. I talked to 2 parties who had tried climbing the day before, but were turned back by high winds & hail. You never know in the Sierras!

Langely lakes
Camped at the trailhead, no mosquitos yet. Hiked into the lakes and walked around with my 14 year old son. Made a few cast and caught a fish and let it go. We had a great time and a great hike. Both of the army passes are clear of snow, it looks like it is clear to the summmit. I plan on returning in July. I is a beautiful place, maybe I'll try to summit it next time, the lakes were just too much fun this time around. Not too many people around yet.

Second time, last time
I checked summit but only got to the summit ridge. Didn't walk over to the actual summit because I was over it by the time I got up.
I did this peak a few years ago with my buddy and hit the actual summit but this time so much GD scree and sand it was a BITCH! Storm rolling in from the west as well and just all around wanted to split.
Great day hike though and great workout! Crossed a snow field at the top of Army pass skiing down the sand and scree from the summit was fun and ran out the last 5 miles. Go do it for the workout but it won't be fun going up after Army Pass...and I'm sure Ill go back to relieve my conscious from not actually summitting :)

third try at this peak very little snow this year. ax recommended for new army for probably another week or two after that should be clear to the top
Overnight backpacking trip at end of September. Enjoyed absolutely perfect weather for that time of the year in the High Sierra. Impressive views from summit.

Snow
There was still snow covering a lot of the route. Went up old army pass, which was completely snow covered and the hardest part. We followed where the trail would have been, on the south side. the snow was really soft on the way down, so we went down new army pass instead. Although it took a while, we found a good route down the rocks. A great 14er.

Via New Army
Did the two day thing, summmited on day on and camped at long lake.
Climbed up from lake 6... I guess that's winter pass. We didn't bring crampons or axes so we had to traverse along the east wall of the bowl. I just followed a bighorn sheep trail. Lots of loose rock, some of which landed on Bare Grundles. OOps
First time up Mt Langley. Great trip got a late start, did not leave the Horseshoe Camp until after 9:00. Got to Cottwood Lakes basin at around 12:00 with intentions of camping and summiting the next day, but decided to go for it that day. Went up Old Army Pass and then straight up the south face to summit at around 1630. I signed the summit book in memory of 9-11-2001. Down Old Army with head lamps and back to camp at the lakes. Walked out the next day.

Langley - the second time in a month
We went up July 17, took New Army up/back. Great time. Noticed the sign in books were all full. SO, we went back 8/21 and did it again. Brought new sign in book (blue spiral in ziplock). Weather was great! Didn't have any snow to cross on New Army. We went down Old Army. Most of the snow had melted since July, but there was a dicey 50' section near the mid section of bowl (the start of where the trail crosses the bowl, to the switchbacks up the south wall). Lots of people (backpackers) were going up it without crampons/ice axes. Going down, it could get dicey in that section though. Don't recommend it without at least microspikes/yaktrax and something to self arrest. Not sure how long it will be safe. Great time though, beautiful area! We'll be back. If taking Old Army, be safe. New Army is a nice safe route. Have fun!

Epic New Army
This 22 (or was it 23?) mile r/t ascent was likely our longest, most grueling day hike ever, not to mention the endless final 3 miles. Fortunately, the views were fantastic, weather good and a two seater buzzed us a few times. A nice introduction to CA high points.
Camped at Lake 5 Friday with three friends. Went up the steep chute the following morning which took us approximately 3 1/2 hours. Reached the Langley summit at 3.30 PM. Spent a couple of hours at the summit. The Old Army Pass trail seemed to difficult to descent in the dark, so we headed over to New Army Pass, but decided to spend the night at the Pass and then head out in the morning.
One of the most challenging and best hikes sofare! Personally I would not recommend the chute to anyone unless you are very experienced with ice axe and crampons(67 degree (average)) self-arrest is not a possibility. One of our team members had a close call and almost fell down the chute. Should I ever do this route again then I would bring ice tools
The round trip from the parking lot to lake five over Old Army Pass to Langley and back down New Army Pass to the parking lot was 26 miles
That is some kind of ice climb! When I was there on July 22, 2011 there was only one set of tracks in the snow from bottom of Old Army Pass to the top. I am not surprised one of your party almost fell, you have to really be experienced to climb that chunk of ice. I don't think the old army pass will be free of snow until Spetember or perhaps not at all passable without an ice climb this year. Regular hikers like myself need to stay off Old Army and use New Army for the summit trek. It's a great hike.
I can only agree and we where in over our heads. We saw a young couple with their two dogs that went up the old army pass trail without crampons or ice axes. And we noticed quite a few skid marks from them in the soft snow when we attempted to go back down late in the evening.
When did you summit Friday or Saturday? If Saturday then we must have passed each other on the trail somewhere.
