Route Climbed: Kite Lake Trailhead Date Climbed: August 9, 2003
My climbing partner Tim and I reached the summit of Mount Lincoln on Saturday, August 9, 2003. This was Tim’s first official 14’er with Cameron being his actual first “unofficial 14’er.” We set out to climb only Lincoln and Bross leaving Democrat off the circle traverse as I had reached its summit earlier this year with a fellow climber.
Route Climbed: Kite Lake via Mt. Democrat and Mt. Cameron Date Climbed: July 9, 2003
Mt. Lincoln looked a little spooky to me from Mt. Cameron, but it was pretty easy to get to on the out and back trail from Cameron. I think it was here that we first noticed all the trucks up on Bross! How crazy is that!!
Route Climbed: Kite Lake via Democrat/Cameron Date Climbed: 7/9/03
Well many people talk about how easy these mountain are, but it is still along day. After making the saddle between Democrat and Cameron, it was time to start back up. Followed the easy trail to the top of Cameron. After reaching the east side of Cameron, we found a large snow field and got 200' glissade or so. It was a nice change of pace for the day. Anyway, reached the saddle between Cameron and Lincoln and started towards the summit. Made the summit in about 20 minutes. I was suprised to find that the Lincoln summit has a little exposure. It is for sure the most exciting of the 4 that I would be on that day.
Route Climbed: Kite Lake to Democrat to Lincoln to Bross Date Climbed: July 3, 2003
My first 14ers! Awesome circuit across three 14ers. Going from Kite Lake to Mt. Democrat to Mt. Lincoln to Mt. Bross is like rounding a seven-mile baseball diamond backwards. Lincoln would be second base.
Great views from the top of Lincoln. What a place to eat lunch!
Route Climbed: Windy Point - 11,200' Date Climbed: June 1, 2002
The walk over to Lincoln was much more scenic than the hike up to Bross. It was very easy and after a half hour of walking I was at the summit. I talked with the people up at the summit and took in the wonderful views. The views from the top of Lincoln were much more scenic than the top of Bross. I sat at the summit for an hour and a half. Then the clouds started to get organized around me so I decided that it was time to head back down. On the way back to the road near Bross I headed up and did Mt Cameron (14,238’) an unofficial fourteener because it’s to close to Mt Lincoln but its on the map.
When I got back to timberline I had a chance to go through the Bristol Cone pine forest. What a site, numerous old trees it is well worth anyone to go and see the old forest.
Summited along with Mt.s Democrat & Bross that day. Went up with the CU hiking club. I remember it was a nice day, and the weather was beautiful. Think that this might've been the 1st summit, then Bross, then Democrat.
8.21.'9- did this from Montgomery Res. via Lincoln Ampitheatre following my ascent of the N ridge of Democrat. Left TH at 15.58. 'Trail' up to, & surmounting headwall steep & unpleasant, but charming in its own way due to its uniqueness...
The way that I took to surmount the headwall ended up being a few 4th class moves. After I popped up into the ampitheatre, was surprised by perhaps the largest moraine I've seen in Colorado.
Having just come from sea level a day before & being under the sun all day (& having just done another 14er), I hit the wall at this point. Seeing the huge, awful headwall of steep scree almost made me turn around... the only thing that kept me going was the thought of having to return & redo what I'd just done.
Somehow I managed to get past this terrible slope (1 step down for every step up this steep scree slope) & summit at 18.52. Took off at 19.00. Descent was horrendous as well, as the layer of scree not deep enough to 'skri' down.
While I started feeling better on the way down, still didn't feel 100% until back in Parker. While I could see this being enjoyable with some ice falls below & a layer of snow covering the slopes above, but as it is (i.e. summer conditions), this was positively the worst scree slog I've ever done. Absolutely terrible. Back at car @ 20.58.
