from the AKD Loj
the weather was nice the whole way up, but the trail was muddy in spots (typical of the Aidirondacks). Beautiful views from the top. I'm glad I made it up early since there were throngs of people coming up when I headed down.
Hiked this one with my wife, who's a bit slow. Took us 11.5 hours to do the 15 mile Van Hoevenberg Trail, with about 7 hours of cold and rain. Still, a great day, despite no views at the top.

Van Hoevenberg Trail
Parked on South Meadow and started up around 6am. Reached the summit around 9am and spent half an hour alone up there until the summit ranger arrived. Weather was beautiful. On the way back down I made side trips up Table Top and Phelps. Amazing views from Phelps but was much too crowded for my taste. Reached my car around 3pm and headed on down to the Catskills for some hiking the next day.
With my brother, overcast but nice--still had some views. 5:30 round trip (2:45 up, 2:45 down)

From Slant Rock
Did it as part of a solo trip. Climb itself was not too bad, but given the time of year, there was steady rain and limited visibility at summit. Loved the lean to, hated having to post hole the entire trail from it.

Longest Solo.
Followed the Van Hoevenberg Trail up & down. Stayed at the Adirondack Loj for the convienence of an early start, nearness to the trailhead and the ammenities of a bed and cooked meals.

A great ending to a long hike.We hiked in at Upper works and climbed Marshall,Cliff,Redfield,Gray,Skylight and finished thr deal with Marcy.Weather was extraordinary for most of the two days.By the time we reached marcy's summit clouds had rolled in along with high winds nd fridged temperatures. The hike out to our car spot at the Loj was pleasant below treeline. It was a great way to close oput the winter season...JimW

Balmy Split Skiing
It was a balmy -10F with 40+ mph winds at the top. The trail was a little too narrow to board down, so we descended mostly in split-ski mode. Only saw 2 skiiers on the upper trail, so had it pretty much to ourselves.

This is the mountain that inspired me to climb and be out doors more. Did it alone in great conditions compared to others that have posted (although it was a bit overcast).

Windy Day
My fiance and I summitted Marcy one fall day after heavy rains moved out. We were the only ones up there as the winds battered us. This is an amazing area!

hike with dad
Was up and down in about 6.5 hours, with 40 minutes at the top. Aside from Mount Washington, my most crowded peak yet. Great weather yielded great views.
Climbed Mt. Marcy with my new HOT girlfriend, we planned to arrive on the summit at dark to enjoy a romantic sunset. But I forgot to bring headlamps for the descent. It was a dark, overcast, moonless night and it took 6 hours to descend. In the morning we were covered with bruises and she dumped me. (:
great hike, lots of people on the trail.sometimes to many..awesome views.

Hardest Thing I've Done To Date!
Set out on a sunny morning hoping for a relatively easy climb. We were warned there would still be snow at the top, but we were not prepared for what we encountered! We took a wrong turn and ended up on a ski trail that added at least an hour. Reached Indian Falls around noon to a breathtaking view of Algonquin. Trail to the top and back down through Tear of the Clouds was covered in 4 ft of snow and ice, making the already difficult trail nearly impassable in places. Elated, we reached the summit around 3pm but worried we would not make it to the leanto on the Mt Colden side before dark. Exhausted, we finally made it right as the sun was setting. Hardest hike I've done yet, but the feeling of accomplishment was worth every step. :)

My first solo SHP - # 22
Nearing the end of the second year of my highpoint quest with my oldest daughter Vanessa. Unfortunately she was suffering from an asthma attack when our family vacationed in the Adirondacks, so I did this SHP alone. Hiked Marcy Dam to Avalanche Pass to Lake Coldenn, Opalescent Creek to Feldspar Leanto where I spent a wonderful night singing Beatles songs with the other campers. Came down from the summit via the Van Hoevenberg Tail past Indian Falls. I was sad for Vanessa, who eventually got to 39 state highpoints. I recently visited my 49th and final SHP, having no intent to do Denali.

got a late start--did this and table top quickly, but had to bypass phelps so i could catch the last ferry back to vermont. very muddy and crowded; probably much more enjoyable during the non-summer months.
