Nice overlooks
Had a first on this trail: found a bird's nest with four speckled eggs in it on a seldom used tertiary trail. I would have missed it if the momma bird hadn't flown out at top speed just as I passed over it.

Section Hike of At
Went over both South & North Marshall during a 4-day section hike of the AT in this area with my brothers. It started to rain while we were on South Marshall & continued to rain off and on the rest of the day.

SNP Loop
I did a loop from Gravel Springs Gap and climbed Mt. Marshall and The Peak.
Previously I have gone up and over North and South Marshall during a four-peak hike that also included Hogback and Little Hogback.
Plenty of boulders to perch on and take in the view. Side trip to Big Devils Stairs is worth the effort.

My first Shenandoah summits!
An unusually warm day for February. Still a few inches of snow on the ground. I hiked over the top of South Marshall and on to North Marshall and back. Nice views from the overlooks on both peaks.

Hiked from Rockfish Gap as part of a 5 day hike on the AT through SNP.
Route Climbed: Jenkins Trail - Mt. Marshall - James River Date Climbed: Sept 4, 2005
I started in the town of Browntown, ascended using the Jenkins Gap Trail. Took a brief stop on the Skyline Drive and descended the other side using the Mt. Marshall Trail. About 3/4 the way down, I joined the Jordan River Trail and ended near the town of Flint Hill where I walked some distance to a relatives house.
All trails were well maintained. The Mt. Marshall Trail had a few tress laying across it but they appeared to be "fresh" and have since then probably been removed. I was glad that I got to see a black bear climbing out of a tree while on the Mt. Marshall Trail.
Weather was Sunny and about 80 degrees, perfect. From Browntown to Flint Hill, the dog and I did about 11 miles.

Traversed the Marshall Ridge early in the foggy, cold morning with howling winds and stunning views. Was prevented from doing so yesterday by a surprise lightning storm. Bivied at Hogwallow Flats and managed a quick dinner between bouts of torential rain. Pushed on to Gravel Springs hut for breakfast and to let the sleeping bag dry out.
