"Got tight last night on absinthe and did knife tricks. Great success shooting the knife into the piano. The woodworms are so bad and eat hell out of all furniture that you can always claim the woodworms did it."

Twelfth HPWe took the Old Mitchell Trail after a thunderstorm had gone on all night. The trail was fairly steep and super muddy, which made for a lot of fun. We enjoyed the hike immensely.
When we got to the top we enjoyed funny looks from those who had driven to the top who couldn't understand why we were so muddy. Most of them would glance at us a few times, then break down and ask us how we had gotten so muddy just walking from our car. It was pretty funny.

Socked in with fog & rainThird in a bid through the "Southern Six-Pack."
Not much to report. My original intention was to hike up Colbert Ridge, past Deep Gap & Big Tom -- but the bummer weather and developing blisters on my feet prompted me to take an easier, shorter route. I went with Long Arm Ridge.
The hike was a bit disappointing & frustrating due to total lack of views & rain. And the blisters went further in spite of all my preventive medicine (apparently too little, too late).
Still, I'm glad I went. Popular summit for the driving crowd.

Great hikeBlack Mountain to Mt Mitchell then on to Mount Craig - 6647', Big Tom - 6580', Balsam Cone 6596', and Cattail Peak 6584'. About a 16 mile day. It was muddy and cloudy, but not cold.

State HP #10Took the Mount Mitchell Trail from Black Mountain Campground in clear, sunny weather. Encountered very few people along the whole trail. Great scenery from the top, but nothing too inspiring below that.

Old Mitchell TrailParked at the main office and hiked the Old Mitchell Trail - much more enjoyable than just driving the last two miles to the summit. A good hike and satisfying meal at the park restaurant!

Great dayLong drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway to get here.... extremely foggy, but we were luck to have the fog lift as we neared the summit.

Cloudy day.My wife and I climbed up this one together. It is technically very easy, but it is a long grueling way up. There is little to see along the way and you don't get much of a view until the peak. We unfortunately summitted on a day when it was very overcast, so we weren't well rewarded. It isn't quite the same to summit a peak that has an asphault road that people can actually use to drive to the top. I would encourage trying to hit this on a sunny day. Many more beautiful hikes in NC, but this is definitely a check mark for those hitting highest points.

FrustrationWhat a bummer, three strikes and I was out.
Strike one - BRP closed 11 miles north of Asheville.
Strike two / three - alternate GPS routes end in closed roadways apx. 4-5 miles from park.
Did'nt try BRP from north as by this time I had traveled/searched 107 miles and 3 hours to no avail.
"I will be back".

#19Bagged this cool mountain on a very foggy, windy, late afternoon. The park was eerily empty and we wad the entire drive, parking lot, and summit walk to ourselves, which made it pretty cool. Zero views.

HP #21It was 55 degrees in Asheville and 23 degrees at the summit parking lot. Really fun to see the clouds (aka fog) pushed up over the mountain from the west. Beautiful day. On the way out the Blue Rigde Parkway was closed due to ice and snow! I didn't see a flake on any of the roads- but what do I know! lol

awesome weatherDrove to the top of Mitchell with "the old folks" and my brother. Frost in the trees made an awesome scenery. Hiked to Mt. Craig and Big Tom and back.

SolitudeTwo hours and fifty minutes to the summit from Black Mountain Campground in driving rain. This was my third trip up and the only time I had the trail to myself the entire day. On sunny days the top will have crowds so be aware but the snack bar at the parking lot has reasonable prices and good hot cider if you visit from May to October.

When I was 12 or so......We drove most of the way up, then walked. Does that count? I guess it would matter if I cared about state highpoints, which I don't. I remember the view being sweet, and thinking, "I'm up higher than anyone east of the Mississippi!"
