Bard, Parnassus, Woods and Machebeuf
Started from Herman Gulch, wrapped around Parnassus and up the SW slopes of Bard. Followed the ridge on over Parnassus, over to Woods, over to Machebeuf, then bushwhacked back down to the Watrous Gulch/Bard Trail Intersection. Nice loop, easy terrain.

"Ski descent"
Dragged skis up for some reason? I'm not quite sure why? Nice summit. Took a nap while the group traversed to Bard Peak.
Second time, loop of Ruby Creek from Urad Mine with Scot and Brian climbing Engelmann, Bard and Parnassus. Very windy day, so we skipped the unranked Robeson to stay off the ridge and out of the wind!

Via Watrous Gulch
Very nice hike but I did not realize how steep the last part of the climb was once you reach treeline. Still worth it because of the great views and I did not see anybody on the trail all day until I got back to Herman Gulch trailhead.

From Bakerville exit
An anomaly! Weather was 60 degrees, sunny and calm...in January!
Hiked up the trail and climbed right up the wind blown west slopes to Parnassus and traversed to Bard. Ridge was also clear of snow.
My first trip of the decade.

Gorgeous Day
Climbed the Northwest route with my wife and 8 and 9 year old boys. Nice and steep until the ridge. Ate lunch at the top. Saw a herd of wild mountain goats, very cool. Took the trail back down to Herman Gulch. Round trip about 5 hours total.

Rkmtn and I made it a 3-fer with Parnassus. My Denali acclimation made this a nice, but steep, hike.

Watrous Gulch Variation 30 July 2005
A very direct route. The slope is steep but fairly easy to pick a path as its mostly grass and soil instead of talus and scree. A great route for an outdoor stairsteper workout.
Due the steepness I came down via the valley between Bard and Parnassus and then picked up the Bard trail back to the TH thus circumnavigating around the mountain.

Headed up with Haliku from Woods after hitting point 12,805' (aka Machebeuf). Enjoyed the views, the company, and the quick descent. Great day in the mountains!

with Bard Peak
Started from Exit 218 at 10:15 am. Raced up Watrous Gulch to beat the predicted afternoon storm and reached Parnassus at 12:25 pm. Considered my escape options before heading to Bard Peak. Ended up running to Bard's summit as a white cloud buried Woods and Parnassus. I stood on Bard for one minute, ran over to its east summit as the flurries came in, then started a direct descent down one of the basins and into the trees. Using my trusty compass and some very faint trail remnants, I ended up at Bakersville (exit 221) and had to walk 3 miles up I-70. I completely avoided the storm, but I would rather have gotten a little cold and wet than walk up I-70 uphill into a headwind! Back to my car at 3:45 pm.

Watrous Gulch
We took the Stairstepper of Doom (southwest ridge) to the summit and descended via the saddle with woods. Great day, no weather threat, but the haze from the California wildfires cut the views considerably. Hiking partners: Rico's CMC outing.

Watrous Gulch
A nice place to be on a great day! A steep one, not much trail above treeline, decent terrain though. Over to Bard from here, descended down the valley between the two, all the way down to I-70. Had to hike a couple miles along the highway to get back to the Herman Gulch TH, which was not nearly as bad as I had imagined. Very few other people on these peaks for a Sunday in summer.

Herman Gulch TH
We first climbed Parnassus from the Herman Gulch trailhead, then over to Bard. For the return we dropped down to a trail that stays on the I-70 side of the mountain until it gets back to Watrous Gulch. We returned to Parnassus (without Bard) on 9-16-06, 12-9-06 & 12-16-06, for it's easy access as a training hike.
